Giant Sequoias

Glacier Point

Yosemite National Park contains three groves of giant sequoia trees, which are Mariposa Grove, Tuolumme Grove, and Merced Grove. The giant sequoia is the largest living thing on earth. They are also among the oldest living things on earth, with some trees being older than 2,700 years. These trees can grow over 320 feet tall and have a diameter of thirty-five feet. They are resistant to insects, disease, and fires. In fact, the lack of fire can hinder the tree's reproduction. Despite their massive size, their roots are only three to six feet deep, but do extend outward for 150 feet. It is truly an amazing experience to walk through a grove of theses incredible giants.

Grizzly Giant

The Mariposa Grove is the largest of the three groves. You should plan to visit this grove. The grove contains many famous trees. The most famous is the Grizzly Giant. The Grizzly Giant is the largest and oldest tree in Yosemite. It is estimated to be over 2,700 years old with a height over 200 feet and diameter of thirty feet. Just next to the Grizzly Giant is the California Tunnel Tree. This tree was tunneled through in 1895, to allow a road to go through it. Despite the huge section cut out of the tree, it stills lives to this day. There are many other unique trees that can be seen as you walk through this grove.

Some of them are:
  • Fallen Monarch
  • Bachelor & Three Graces
  • Faithful Couple
  • Clothespin Tree
  • Mariposa Tree
  • Columbia Tree
  • Telescope Tree
  • Fallen Wawona Tunnel Tree
  • Galen Clark Tree
