Karavan Karachi Heritage Streetfest travels to Kemari

KARACHI-The efforts being made for preservation of the City's historical heritage through platform of Karavan Karachi Heritage Streetfest on Sunday reached the Kemari Boat Basin and Clock Tower, at Jinnah road that recently has been renovated by Karachi Port Trust. The renowned film star Zeba Bakhtiar and artist Jimmy Engineer attended the fest. This Sunday's event, the tenth of a series of heritage Streetfest highlighting the city's architectural heritage, emphasised the importance of Karachi Port Trust in the City's development. The Kemari Boat Basin and Clock Tower, situated at the western end of MA Jinnah Road, have been recently renovated by Karachi Port Trust, demonstrating the KPT's efforts to restore the architectural heritage under its custody. The historic structure using Gizri stone walls and slopping roofs was built during 1906-1913, and was inaugurated by Bombay Governor Lord Sydneham. The distinctive tower is reminiscent of the towers of Empress Market, Jehangir Kothari Building and Sindh Madrassah. In the tradition of Karavan Karachi the festivities began with upbeat tunes played by Pakistan Navy Band. Skits and national songs presented by the students of St. Lawrence Government School as well as by special children of ACALP. PIA scouts were at hand to help and guide the participants while Master Tai's group gave martial arts demonstration. Liberty Theatre, which was developing of following of its won, put up a street theatre performance.Along with free face painting, the usual workshops include sketching and painting conducted by Shazli and Waseem and volunteers from various arts schools. Badar Kalam gave prizes to young artists. The photographs taken by students in the 9th Heritage Streetfest of Holy Trinity Cathedral on display. The Karavan Karachi Signature Roll carrying signatures of thousands of people including some famous ones such as Governor Sindh Mohammedmian Soomro, Finance Minister Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and veteran film star Nadeem, was now 180 metres long and was rolled out for Karachiites to sign and register their presence. The stall of "Say no to smoking' propagated hazards of smoking for the young. The Karavan Karachi Heritage Street fests, organised by Heritage Wallay-Friends of Heritage Foundation were held every Sunday afternoon to celebrate the city's historic architecture and led up to the festivities being organised for the whole month of September. The weekly streetfests were becoming a popular recreational venue for the young and old are regularly attended by large numbers of people from all walks of life.
