Major Cities

It has only been during the last three generations that Saromatia has seen the rise of true urban cities. The captial, Garonne, was little more than the queen's estate. Vezias was an ivory tower in the wilderness, where scholars could think in quiet. Soustons and Tourilac were forts at the sea or crossroads, and Joyeuse was a castle in the clouds. Now, they are each thriving centers of trade and even culture.

Garonne is the captial of Saromatia. The queen's castle, Blancheflor, is here, as well as the largest temple to Saromata in the world. The city has many wonderful sights to delight the visitor.

Vezias is the home of a great institution of learning. "If it's known," the saying goes, "they know it in Vezias." Above all else, however, the medical school commands the most renown and respect. The roving high priest of the Air Lord often blows in to Vezias as well.

Soustons is a vigorous, energetic place. Once little more than a lookout post and base for siren-killing activities, the women of Soustons purged their spot of coastline of the singing monsters in a sudden spasm of enthusiasm and blood. The area is patrolled ruthlessly to keep sirens away, and the women of Soustons are putting their first ships to sea. They have been courting the clergy of the Water Lord to build a large temple here, as well.

Tourilac is what Soustons may one day be. After Garonne, it is the richest city in Saromatia - and Tourilac earned every cent. Centrally situated at a hub of roads and rivers, much of Saromatia's trade passes through Tourilac.

Joyeuse is also called the City of Song. It began as a small commune of poets and mintrels squatting on a lady's land, enjoying the patronage she provided them. Eccentric that she was, she left her estates to the lot of them, and the queen upheld it. Joyeuse's founders wanted it to be a free and happy place, and some laws and all taxes are less here than elsewhere. A cleric of Fortuna has wandered in and declared a dicing hall the High Temple, and no one has yet contradicted him on the matter.
