The Saromatian Army

It's not likely that the army will be a big part of game play, but there are a couple of interesting things about it.

The first is that it is sex-segregated. Men are formed into heavy infantry shock troops. They are given the heaviest armor, shields, and weapons that they can handle, and are expected to plow into the enemy or serve as a shield against her advance. Since the enemy is often a centaur tribe, this is no mean feat - it's like standing up to a cavalry charge.

Women are more lightly armed and armored, and their units rely more on swiftness than heavy blows. There is some light infantry, as well as units of archers.

The Saromatian cavalry is the other unique feature of the army. There are no riding horses in Saromatia, only scrubby mules and ponies. The fastest, largest, meanest mount around is the rhacos . These huge flightless birds are carnivorous and not very sweet-tempered, and in the wild they're dangerous animals. Most cavalry mounts are raised from birth by their riders and bond with them. (Most cavalry riders actually raise several rhacos at once, in case a mount is killed in battle). Cavalry riders are often equipped with spear or lance and sword, but firing a bow from birdback is difficult, to say the least.
