lifespan 2: Shane C Gets Shattered

Second To Go
Shane C injured himself in the second immunity challenge.  Without even the formality of a vote, the Australian adventure-camp director is the second to leave the game.

The Story of Shane C
Shane had only a very few, brief dialogues with his tribemates, more like checking-in on an answering machine than real conversations.  Although he had a good sense of humour, Shane became something of a loner, making little impression with his tribe and contributing nothing of merit to the challenges.

Why Shane?
Shane had no real strategy, no personal connections, no alliances, and had done nothing for any of the challenges.  If he hadn't taken himself out of the game by disqualification, it is almost certain that he would have been voted out by his tribemates.  Shane was seen as being lazy, and would have been an easy vote.

Do Something, Shane - Do Anything!
What could Shane have done to avoid his fate?  For starters, he had to keep himself healthy enough to compete in challenges and not be disqualified.  A certain amount of that is bad luck, but Shane could have been more awake and attentive to his environment.

Shane also could have worked with the others in Cree instead of isolating himself.  Shane is likeable enough and could have allowed his tribe to see that.  Unfortunately, Shane didn't give anybody any reason to keep him.

Who Else?
Was it Shane C's time to go?  Absolutely.  But let's take a look at who else might have been voted out.

Miriam - Narrowly avoiding elimination at the previous Tribal Council, Miriam has taken that warning to heart and curbed the disruptive elements of her behaviour.  She has secured allies and made an effort at mending ways with those who voted for her.  Voting her out now — or then — would have been a mistake.

Rob - Rob has been a strong and dedicated player in the challenges.  However, he has earned the distrust of fellow tribemates for his outspoken behaviour and for voting against Miriam.  It would be in Cree's best interests to repair this situation, though if it had gone to a vote at this point, Rob might have been out.

Janei - Janei has missed half of the challenges, which is still a good sight better than Shane C.  However, Janei has made alliances and is well-liked by her tribe, that she is likely to stay around a while longer.

Mike - Mike has also missed half of the challenges.  He is a loose fourth in the Rob-Karen-Janei alliance, but if Mike doesn't solidify this soon he may find himself the next from Cree to go.

Conclusion
I ask myself if the game would be any different if Shane C had not been in it, and I don't believe that it would.  Without a doubt, it was Shane's time to go.
