Episode Two

Previously, on Survivor Canada

Twenty castaways were split into two tribes and immediately sent into their first challenge.  Paleo not only lost the reward but lost two of their tribemates in the unforgiving Ontario wilderness.  At the next challenge an overconfident Cree blew their lead, and blame their immunity loss on lack of participation and disruptiveness.  Tiffany votes herself out 5-4 at Tribal Council, with the Karen-Rob-Mike-Janei alliance giving a strong warning to Miriam.

CREE, NIGHT 3

Cree are quiet on their hike back from Tribal Council, carefully picking their way by torchlight through the forest.

Mike stops for a camera confessional, and sums up their feelings:  "I am really surprised how fast the tribe split.  We seem to be very distant to say the least.  It'd be great if we could reunite the way and be like we used to.  That is the missing element that Paleo has now that we don't."

"It was shocking to see Miriam receive 4 votes; she has helped out when others haven't," Staton says in a confessional.  He is nervous if they are going to vote out active players, and is glad that he has an alliance.

When they arrive at camp and get their fire going again, Miriam breaks the silence.  "I am very sorry I let you down at the challenge. I guess I just get excited and mess things up.  Reading the tribal votes I realized that I thought I came off to you all as one way, but apparently have come off a completely different way."  Getting it out in the open, she continues, "To the tribemate that thinks I'm hot headed... I'm sorry.  To the tribemate that thinks I'm sneaky... I'm sorry.  And to the tribemate that thinks I slowed them down... I'm sorry.  I let you all down and all I can say is I will try to do better.  All of you are wonderful people and no matter what happens in this game, it has been a true pleasure getting to know you."

There are only mute replies.  At this point, the tribe just want to put it behind them.

PALEO, DAY 4

Emmanuel and Diana, the two Hispanics of Paleo, joke around.  Likening herself to Sandra Diaz-Twine, Diana threatens Eman that she'll: "sell you to the local lesbian for rice if you don't behave."  Looking over the meagre breakfast they can ration themselves, hunger is taking its toll.  Thinking about Valentine's, Diana says that she'd rather have steak than candies.  "I guess it can be a heart-shaped steak," she laughs.

Eman apologized for not being able to do anything on the last immunity challenge, but Diana says that they won so it's cool.  "Don't worry about it, I won't hold it against you," she tells him, but adds that she's not sure about the rest of the tribe.  Eman acknowledges that, and plans on full participation from now on.

Diana says that she likes most of the people on Paleo.  Eman agrees, but notices her use of the word "most".  Diana suggests that those not pulling their weight need to go:  Nathan and Michelle.  Eman agrees about Nathan.  He also notes that he hasn't really connected with Tabatha, but Diana suggests that Tabatha's work on the Immunity Challenge earned her a "brownie point" worth keeping her around.

CREE, DAY 4

Miriam and Staton have a talk, and Staton encourages Miriam to stay in the game and not to give up.  Miriam just wanted to have a good time and get to know people, but feels that she's failing at both after receiving so many votes at tribal council.  When she looks back she sees how she might have offended some of her tribemates, and is heartbroken about it.

"I honestly believe Staton.  Aiden said he voted for Tiffany.  I know Shane voted for Tiffany, I voted for Tiffany, and Tiffany voted for herself."  Miriam counts up the votes and deduces that Vince was the one absent, and that the four votes against her came from Karen, Rob, Mike and Janei.  "I really don't get it.  But if I am guessing correctly at least I know who to watch out for now."  Miriam doesn't think she could bear the pain of being blind-sided again by people she likes.

REWARD CHALLENGE, DAY 4

The Host welcomes both tribes to their second Reward Challenge.  Once again they will be playing for a head-start on the next Immunity, but this time it will be doubled.  The challenge is pretty simple.  The members of each tribe must gather different items from the rocky beach and the forest behind them, and carry them onto floating decks on the lake.  For each item a tribe has which does not match an item the other tribe has, they will get a point.  The tribe with the most points will win the challenge.  In the event of a tie, the fastest tribe will win.

The challenge begins and Rob, seeing himself as the physically strongest, gathers up a dozen items from along the beach and hits the water, swimming on his back while holding his items against his chest.  However, when he gets to Cree's blue deck he fumbles and drops almost everything.  Rob recovers three things which he puts on the deck, then helps Miriam who is right behind him.

Tabatha surprises everyone at being a fast swimmer and the first on the Paleo deck, with three items.  However, Paleo falls further behind as Staton and Janei reach their deck and bring Cree's total up to 9 items.  Jon and Michelle show some teamwork as they reach Paleo's deck together, floating several items between them on a piece of driftwood.  Items are piling up and the race looks close.

While Janei kept their find afloat and others helped unload it, Staton makes a second trip and swimming with Aiden brings Cree another four items.  Kelley, an excellent swimmer, counters with three items for Paleo.  Next is Vince for the Cree tribe, which has been ahead the whole race and looks to ready to win another reward.

Well behind the others, Shane, Rick and Diana dog-paddle their way to Paleo's raft, seemingly empty-handed.  But wrapped inside their buffs, each has brought several small items:  granite pebbles, pine needles, moss, lichen, leaves, twigs, bark, and such.  Nathan gets there with some branches, but there is nowhere to put it and Paleo decide to abandon it rather than risk upsetting the floating deck and losing what they already have.  Mike tries to get in a last couple items but time is called.

From the comfort of her canoe, the Host totals their items.  After eliminating duplicates, Cree has 8 unique items to Paleo's 13.  There is some minor arguing from Janei that where Cree had a branch as a single item, Paleo split up the same thing as bark, twigs, branch, needles and pine cone to count as several.  However, the Host remains firm in her decision.

PALEO, DAY 4

Nathan congratulates his tribe.  "Great Job guys on the reward challenge!"

"We are on a roll!" Diana exclaims.  "Congrats, tribemates.  It was a wonderful challenge and great teamwork!  I'm happy to be here with you all."

"Yeah, good job y'all," Tabatha says, chanting, "Rollin rollin rollin."

"That Janei cracked me up!" Diana goes on.  "I'm sorry, I know it's cruel, but her buttons were too easy to push.  Between her and hot-head Miriam, team Cree looks like they're gonna just break into a wrestling match any second," Diana laughs.

On the way back to camp, Diana talks with Emmanuel who hadn't gotten anything for the challenge.  She tells him how they won by a lot.  Emmanuel believes their winning streak is going to last.  Diana disdains Cree's lack of participation, but Eman fails to catch the hint.  He suggests, "I guess I'm the good-luck charm this tribe needed."

"Sure you are," Diana replies, "like a little immunity idol."  But Diana is already thinking about what happens when that luck runs out.

CREE, DAY 4

Rob and Miriam discuss their vulnerability in the tribe.  Rob is pretty upset about some confusion in the last RC, not the least because blame might be falling on him.  Miriam likes Rob but knows that he voted for her under similar circumstances.  Not sure what to tell him, Miriam admits that the loss hurt pretty bad but assures him it'll be okay.  "I didn't join this game to be ruthless and lie.  For me it's an escape," Miriam tells him.  "I would like to make it to the jury but I just want to have fun."

Rob agrees, adding that he didn't mean to imply anything and apologizes for his sarcastic attitude.  He tells her that he signed up to play, and he'll play hard until the time comes that he's voted off.  Miriam believes they can still win immunity despite their reward challenge loss, reminding him of the first set of challenges where she cost Cree their lead time and immunity, and suggesting the same will happen to Paleo.

"It's no big deal about the first challenge.  That's ancient history," Rob tells her.  Miriam gives him a big hug.  Rob grins ear to ear, and they start pulling silly faces at each other until they're both laughing.

When Cree sit down to supper, Aiden brings up their situation with back-to-back losses, their split at the last Tribal Council and where they stand as a tribe.

Still annoyed at a comment Rob made about who should be voted out at the next Tribal Council, Aiden thinks his intentions were to stir up the tribe.  "The only way I see for us to make it through this game, is to be unified.  We are a tribe and I just feel like it's so early in the game to try to divide us and turn us against each other."  Aiden thinks it was jumping the gun to be talking about what to do if they lose immunity again.  He tells Rob, "I think it was a lousy move."

Rob laughs at the idea of them having any tribal unity, saying, "We didn't have that before."

Aiden thinks that Rob made that a self-fulfilling prophecy; that it was something that needed to be worked on, and Rob shattered the hope of it ever happening.

Rob says he was just stating his opinion, as asked, and that he'll be quiet if it'll make everyone happy.

Staton intervenes, saying that tribal unity starts with behaving properly, with pulling yourself together and putting disagreements behind you, "So you can do everything for the team and your best on the challenges — and everyone, can we at least do that?"

Miriam tells them that there will be enough hard decisions later, that this should be the time they're having the most fun in the game.  "As a tribe we are family, and you might get aggravated at your brother or sister, but blood is thicker than water and if someone has to go then they better have a different tribe name!  Unity means Cree:  one entity fighting to stay together."

Shane C tries to ward off the tension in the air.  Vince tells them that they should all be happy.  "We should be fun!  We should be like a family!  Please guys, change the attitude."

Staton hopes that they can put it behind them.  "Let's be a team and kick some of the other tribe's asses."  Later, in a confessional, Staton says that he hates being the mediator.  "Sometimes I wish I wasn't the type that liked everyone," he sighs.

PALEO, NIGHT 4

While on their shift watching the fire, Eman tells Jon how glad he is that they won the Reward Challenge without him.  But he's a little worried about it, too.  Jon simply tells him, "this game involved luck."

Eman can't get over what this place is like compared to Los Angeles, the air, and all the stars.  "Out in the Canadian Wilderness right now... I feel like I'm high, like I'm drunk, but I'm not... it's strange."

Jon doesn't have much to say to that, as he plays cards by firelight.  Eman notes that Jon makes neutral responses about everything, and wonders what he's being so careful not to give away.

PALEO, DAY 5

Jon and Diana confirm the alliance the two of them have with Dan and talk about who they might consider adding.  "I was thinking about Eman," Diana tells him, "but he didn't do anything for the challenges."  Jon says that he doesn't think Eman likes him, but he thinks that Tabatha seems cool.  Diana notes that Tabatha has been strong in the challenges and would be good to add.  She suggests that Jon approach her, not wanting to seem too aggressive herself.

Diana notes that the people she sees most are Dan, who isn't much of a conversationalist, and Eman, who doesn't have anything interesting to say.  "When it comes to the merge, we have to think more about these things," Diana tells Jon.  "Three is a good number."

They discuss who they think are the weaker players on their tribe, agreeing that Nathan and Michelle are the weak links.  As much as she loves chatting with him, if he misses another challenge Eman is third in Diana's mind.  They don't see any scheming from the other players, though Diana feels Shane has been a little too slick.

However, Diana finds that she needn't worry about Shane's influence when Shane calls a meeting and she's the only one to show up.

Diana jokes how some of the other Survivors flipped about her joke after the last Reward Challenge results were announced.  "Sometimes my humour hits people like a ton of bricks."  Diana decides she has to be careful and tread lightly with Cree.

Shane, however, wants to dominate the other tribe.  "We can beat them every time and get rid of them all."  Diana agrees that would be ideal, but not too much fun.

Diana notes that Rick did amazing on the last Immunity.  "He's lightning fast."  She suggests that the three of them get together.

CREE, DAY 5

Karen talks about her tribe in a camera confessional.  "Rob is my number one buddy and ally in the whole game.  Janei is very nice and I seem to click well with her; we get along great."  Karen notes that Mike asked her about how the last vote was going, so there's alliance potential there but she's not sure if Mike is playing her.  "Vince goes along with Miriam's game, whether he's being nice or if he really likes her."  Karen wishes Shane C did more for the challenges, "but it doesn't hurt us too bad at this point that he's not."

Asked about his alliances, Mike says he is "kind of with Rob.  I'm not really sure maybe Karen too?"  Mike is starting to think that he must be one of the outsiders in the game, because his tribemates ignore him and leave him out of the loop.  "I just feel so left out, why can't I do some of the plotting?"  Who would he vote out?  "Vince."

But as the Karen-Rob-Janei-Mike alliance is beginning to show weakness, the rest of the tribe are getting organized, spurred on by Miriam who received KRJM's votes at the first tribal council and fueled by Rob's demoralizing comments at camp.

Aiden really likes Staton and Miriam and has made alliances with each of them.  In a camera confessional, he says that "Someone I do not trust in the slightest is Rob."  Rob may be strong in the challenges, but Aiden gets an awful vibe from him.  "If we do go down at the next immunity challenge, I hope he goes down at Tribal Council.  He's just a friggin' pain in my ass."

Later, Aiden is feeling a bit sick and taking it easy.  When Vince checks on him, Aiden takes the opportunity to campaign against Rob, mentioning Rob's recent comments at camp.  "It was kinda offensive.  I was shocked."

Vince agrees.  "He was like trying to destroy our tribe."

Aiden asks, if they lose immunity, would Vince be willing to vote Rob off?  Aiden promises that Miriam will vote for Rob, as Rob is after her, and Aiden has a fourth vote in mind (Staton's).  Vince wants to talk with Miriam to be sure she is on board, but it sounds like a good plan to get rid of Rob.

Shane C is found using lip gloss — his luxury item, to look good for his final interview — to sooth some insect bites.  It works so well that he hasn't told his tribemates and is keeping the limited supply for himself.  He still hasn't made any alliances, and Shane has been a bit down due to the severely reduced diet.  He says that his strategy is to "not lose sleep if I go."

TREEMAIL

Do you know what's what
Do you know who's who?
It's a case of mistaken identity
What do you do?

Recall back to the times
Where you watched these folks play
Would it be too hard
To identify them today?

PALEO, DAY 5

Michelle guesses that the upcoming challenge will be trivia of some sort, probably about the past TV Survivor games.  "We can totally win this again and shut out Cree."

"Paleo will kick some butt on this challenge," Kelley agrees.

Tabatha agrees that it's likely the first voted-off Survivors.

Rick wonders if it might be more tricky, like old High School pictures of past Survivors.

CREE, DAY 5

Miriam thanks Karen for trying to get along, and tells her that she really appreciates it.  She asks for advice in the challenge so that she doesn't screw it up this time.  Karen suggests Miriam just be herself and play for herself.

Miriam understands, but everything was crazy, everybody going in different directions without any organization.  She didn't mean to, but she feels like she was saying too much and brought the tribe down.  Miriam doesn't want to repeat that.  "Someone has to delegate whatever the things are we have to do."  Miriam suggests Karen for that role.

Karen understands what she's saying, but is reluctant to take leadership.  "I think a lot of the problem is that we were all rushing."  She points out that the treemail suggests they'll have plenty of time at this challenge.
Miriam feels a bit better at that, but the last tribal council really scared her.  "I just didn't realize I made so many people mad," she confides.  "Hopefully I can somehow redeem myself."

Staton makes a confessional:  "I talked to Karen and she feels the same way I do basically and it looks like we will be the deciding votes if we go to TC after the challenge.  I'm gonna do everything possible for us to win."  Staton feels a little sick about the whole thing, and hopes that it doesn't slow him down in the competition.

IMMUNITY CHALLENGE, DAY 5

The host announces that today they're going to play a game of Mistaken Identity.  Twenty-one snapshots of Survivors from past series have blown up and posted on trees.  The twist is that the pictures only show a single feature of the Survivor: eyes, nose, fingers, mouth, etc.  Also, the pictures have been tacked onto the trees several metres off the ground, so the players can either take a cursory view from the ground or use a shaky rope bridge for a closer inspection.  Each tribe has a board on which they must post the name of the Survivor and which season they are from.  The tribe with the most correct answers when time runs out will win — and there will be a mystery tie-breaker.

Dan felt a bit dizzy on the hike so at the last moment he sits-out of the challenge for Paleo instead of Diana, who they'd earlier agreed upon.  Paleo has a head-start and because they don't have to worry about Cree overhearing them, they discuss who they think the pictures are, even calling answers down from the rope bridge for others to run and post on their board.

Paleo have a third of their answers on their board when Cree begins, with a lot of catching up to do.  For safety there is only one-way traffic on the rope bridge with no passing, and members of opposing tribes get blocked.  Rather than waiting, Shane C jumps off at one point, and there is something wrong as he runs back to Cree's board.

While Cree scramble to finish, Rick, Shane and Michelle suggest some changes to Paleo's answers.  There is some discussion, and they make five guesses with one correct and change one which was already right, so there is no net effect.

The Host checks their answers.  Paleo got 15 out of 21 correct.  But before counting Cree's and announcing the results, Zoe notices Shane C — he'd been gritting his teeth for a while but can no longer hide his pain.  Zoe takes him to a medic.

Not aware of what's happening, Kelley draws Diana aside.  "So the ones who didn't help were Dan, Nathan and Emmanuel?" she asks.

Diana nods, and whispers back, "If we lose, well... you know."

The waiting is killing Tabatha.  She has a migraine and feels her blood pressure is way up.

Zoe returns, alone.  She announces the results:  Paleo have 15 correct, and Cree have only 7.  Paleo has won their third consecutive challenge.

The Host has an immediate announcement for the Cree tribe.  "You will not be going to Tribal council," she tells them, to everyone's surprise.  Shane C is dropping out of the game for medical reasons.  He had been under the weather for a while, and the medics have determined that he has now broken his ankle.  "With Shane C dropping out, Cree are exempt from Tribal Council."

The two tribes go their separate ways, Paleo cheering another victory while Cree's heads hang downward.  Cree know, at least, they will be spared another difficult night hike to Tribal Council.
