Flying over an endless stretch of Christmas trees and glinting water that is Northern Ontario, 20 people are about to begin the adventure of a lifetime. They are about to be abandoned in a vast region where the dark boreal forest crosses over the rough Precambrian rock of the Canadian Shield. Their neighbours will be black bears, moose and timber wolves, among much more wildlife. There is little rainfall or forage, and extremes of cold temperature are greater than places in the Arctic Circle. At the center of the nation of Canada, it is a primal land virtually untouched by the modern world.
For the next 35 days, these 20 people will be left to fend for themselves, battling the elements and each other. They must adapt and persevere or they'll be voted out. Are they up for the task? In the end, only one will remain.
35 days, 20 people, 1 survivor.
The pontoons of two Gruman Twin Otter aircraft slice into the water of a lake which looks far too short a landing strip. The pilots skillfully taxi around and moor at a pair of small, floating docks, where their passengers deplane. Some of them stretch from the three-hour flight; others seem shaken from the unfamiliar landing. On the rocky lakeshore, they are handed their buffs.
Wearing blue are members of Cree tribe:
Aiden, a 18 year old bartender from New York
Janei, a 18 year old from California
Karen, a 27 year old from Louisiana
Mike, a 36 year old from Ontario
Miriam, a 36 year old graphic shop manager from U.S.A.
Rob, an athletic director from Virginia
Shane C, a 28 year old adventure camp director from Australia
Staton, a 20 year old actor from North Carolina
Tiffany, a 14 year old veterinarian student from West Virginia
Vince, a 14 year old piano student from the Philippines
Wearing red are the members of Paleo tribe:
Cheryl, a 14 year old from Europe
Dan, a 17 year old from Wisconsin
Diana, a 41 year old painter from New York
Jon, a full-time student from Ontario
Kelley, a 30 year old catering assistant from Washington
Michelle, a 20 year old from Saskatchewan
Nathan, an 18 year old Eagle Scout from Tennessee
Rick, a 32 year old restauranteur from Ohio
Robby, a 20 year old from the USA
Shane, a 23 year old forensic biologist from U.S.A.
The survivors are informed that the game is beginning immediately with their first challenge, which will test them both as individuals and in their ability to work as tribes.
The rules of the challenge are simple — completing the challenge will prove far more difficult. Each survivor has been given a different riddle, the solutions to which will help them navigate waypoints on the trail to their tribe's campsite, where food, water and supplies await them. The first tribe to get all of their members to their camp will win the challenge and receive a fifteen-minute head start on the next immunity challenge. Also, the sooner they get to their camp, the sooner they can start preparing for the cold night ahead.
The tribes are given the "go" and left puzzling at where the riddles are. Karen of Cree is first to realize that the riddles are folded inside their buffs, and there is a frenzy as survivors tear their buffs off to find their riddles.
The Cree tribe huddle together in one big group and start solving their riddles. They are able to answer four of their riddles almost immediately, and armed with that information find their trail and set off.
Paleo aren't so patient and break into two's and three's, taking different branches of their trail. However, not everyone is intent upon solving their riddles. Many of the Paleo tribe set their riddles aside and discuss their tribemates and the future of the game, laying the foundation for alliances.
Although Paleo's strategy allows them to cover more ground, not having all their riddles in hand prevents them from being able to match riddles to waypoints and they make more wrong guesses than right ones. The Cree tribe successfully solve six riddles to Paleo's three. Karen, scouting one path while others work on the seventh riddle, is able to spot the blue flag at their camp. In an excited charge, Cree run to the finish.

The members of Cree tribe take a moment to catch their breath and look over the campsite that is to be their new home. Many are still in a bit of shock at the sudden start to the game and what it is to be in a dense, virgin forest. However, the overall mood is excitement topped with jubilation at winning the reward challenge.
"Cree Rocks!" Miriam exclaims. "I think we are so strong!"
Vincent loves the tribe. "Everyone here is united, and each member has a unique personality that I would like to get to know more of."
Aiden agrees. "We work really well together."
Everybody introduces themselves, and they take turns telling the tribe about each other, having fun, joking around and learning about their new camp-mates. Karen gains some quick popularity as she breaks out her luxury item — a tube of neosporin — for some of the nastier scratches from running through the forest.
"I hope if nothing else we each learn something about one another and make a new friend," says Miriam.
Jon struggles into the Paleo camp only to find waiting treemail which informs him that the challenge has already been won by Cree. When Diana, Michelle and Rick join him, Jon breaks the bad news. "From what I hear... Cree beat us in this reward."
"Sorry I didn't make it in time," Michelle apologizes, rubbing sore muscles from the extended hike. "I was working uphill the whole way."
Not knowing each other, most are cautiously apologetic that they weren't able to do as much as they could have. However, the defeat is taken lightly. Rick consoles his tribemates, saying that it's good that Cree got the win. "They'll need the extra 15 minutes next challenge so it won't look so bad when we kick their butts!"
Diana agrees that it will give Cree a false sense of security, and that they're just warming up to "kick Cree's ass in the immunity challenge."
After resting for a little while, they return to the trail, backtracking and calling out for tribemates who are still trying to find their way.
Cree take an accounting of their supplies but don't do any work until Miriam points out that they really should get started on doing something. She has a lighter as her luxury item and volunteers to start a fire so they can at least be warm and cook their food. Mike reminds her to be careful because of the fire risk from pine oil. Miriam agrees and asks for help to build a sheltered fire pit.
Janei is secretly upset that she was unable to solve her riddle in the Reward Challenge. "What really hurts me is the bonding that I missed. This puts me at a huge disadvantage already because I have no idea of anybody's personalities or alliances." With some catching up to do, Janei joins Rob and Karen foraging around the camp, collecting wood for the shelter and fire.
Tiffany picks some wildberries she comes across.
Staton and Aiden take charge of building the shelter, setting up the framework of a large lean-to for their first night.
Shane C and Vince check out the lake that their camp is situated on, going opposite directions along the shore.
Additional hours of hiking turn up tribe-members who misread their riddles and took wrong directions. As they gather together, Paleo hear more bad news. Shane hadn't wanted to say anything during the challenge but the Monday before the game began he was at his grandmother's funeral. "I was exhausted emotionally and physically, so I hope you guys understand that. And no, this isn't a Johnny Rotten stunt."
Everyone expresses their sympathies to Shane. However, alone with Rick, Michelle suspects he's playing Johnny Fairplay. "Not that I mean to disrespect him or his family or anything, it was just the first thing that popped into my brain."
Rick doubts it, but admits, "This is Survivor after all, eh?"
"Exactly," Michelle replies.
Despite this caution, Rick goes to Shane, and after talking about family and sports, turns the discussion to past Survivor shows and strategy. Shane feels responsible for their loss, but Rick reassures him. Asked if he has set up any alliances, Rick admits that he's open. "I've approached Michelle, 'cause her and I were the first two to talk to each other."
Meanwhile, Diana and Dan have agreed to an alliance, and look to align with the stronger members of Paleo. They quickly go to Jon to offer him an alliance. "Sure," Jon agrees, "us three seem to be the most active." Jon thinks it'll help in the long run. Diana was thinking the same thing, and it doesn't hurt that they're all pretty darn friendly.
Paleo know that they have to get back to camp before they lose the light. They call off their search, hoping that the two missing tribe-members found a different route to their camp.
Cree have put together a tidy little camp with the open side of their lean-to facing their small fire. It isn't much but they should be warm for the night.
Tending the fire, Miriam notes that she hasn't received as many blackfly and mosquito bites as her tribemates. She concludes that the smoke from the campfire is keeping them away, and suddenly the fire becomes an even stronger focal point to the camp. Not only is fire life, it is a respite from the pests.
Tiffany mashes up a few handfuls of spruce tips in boiling water to make a kind of tea. Vince plays a little music and Cree have a sing-along as they crowd around the fire. They swap stories and make plans for what else needs to be done around the camp until weariness overpowers their excitement.
"Day One was great," Staton says in a confessional, while Cree is winding down for the night. "Our team pulled through and won reward challenge with Karen's figuring out. It was great to see everyone that was there trying to help out. I really think I'm gonna get along with Mike and Rob pretty good, and Miriam and Karen are great also."
Their last decision is to set five two-person watches through the night, to tend to the fire and guard their food against nocturnal scavengers.
Nightfall came quickly in the deep forest, and Paleo have neither shelter nor fire for their first night. The long hike has left them covered with insect bites, and sweat-dampened clothing which drains their body heat in the chill night air.
Diana uses her painting canvas as a blanket. Shane hugs onto the pillow he has brought as a luxury item. Rick is in the best shape with a Gortex army jacket which he shares with Michelle. They all huddle together in the cold, their collective shivering and scratching preventing much sleep. But they know it could be worse...
Cheryl and Robby are still lost in the forest.
At first light, two women of the Cree tribe sit at their fire. Miriam is building up the campfire to cook breakfast for the tribe. Tiffany isn't awake by choice; she was restless all night. Despite being tired and out of sorts, Tiffany puts on a cheerful face as her tribemates gather around to share a small meal of wild rice and spruce tea.
"I want all of you to know what fun I had at our first meeting," Miriam tells everyone, still happy about the previous evening around the campfire. She points out how a million dollar prize is great but couldn't buy a real friend. "I wish all of you good luck and let's win all the challenges so none of us has to go home for a good while!"
Vince also says he's happy, but soon decides to try his luck at fishing with a "Catch ya later!" to his tribemates.
In a camera confessional, Vince explains, "My strategy is to stay low and under the radar. I want to be approached rather than do the scheming myself. I'll observe them and let all the egos shout at each other while I mind my own business."
Karen has a more active strategy. "I'm looking at short-term goals... I must make merge, then jury, then final 2, then win. I don't know if I'll be able to pull it off... I'm not too confident about my abilities to 'use' this particular group of tribemates." To get herself ahead, Karen has made alliances with Rob and Janei. "I tried to get Miriam and Staton at the very beginning of the game, to feel them out. But both said they preferred to make a pact to simply not vote for me. I dunno if they really mean that or if that's just a nice way of telling me no thanks because they're already in one." Karen also suspects that Aiden and Staton are allied because they seem tight.
Miriam is trying to do the best for the tribe as a whole and admits that she hasn't made any alliances yet. "Vincenzo is sweet and asked me for an alliance. I tried gently to tell him it is too early; I hope he understood." Miriam likes Mike, Staton and Karen, and Rob seems nice. However, she's worried about Karen's competitiveness — the "too strong" thing. The rest of the tribe didn't do much for the first challenge, and Miriam believes this will keep her safe for a while. Her strategy is to enjoy the game to the fullest and do her best to make good decisions, adding, "decisions that I can live with."
The new day allows Paleo to resume foraging and attempt to better their camp situation. However, some of the Paleo tribe find themselves suffering from the "umbles" of hypothermia: bumbles, mumbles, jumbles and fumbles. Work progresses slowly as half of the tribe are in a mental haze.
Fire is made a high priority. Nathan has a good plan with a stick-and-slot pallet primed with a mix of bark gum and dry, crushed pine needles. However, Kelley is the one who finds the right combination and gets it to light. Paleo sit quietly around the fire, almost mesmerized by it. Hardly anyone moves for the next hour or so except to put more wood on the fire. Gradually that gives way to chopping wood, and hauling wood out of the forest. Then they're warm enough to notice that they're hungry, and Jon and Michelle put on a barley soup.
With a bit of food and warmth in them, Paleo get a better start on building their camp. They determine not to spend another night like the last one.
Spirits are high at Cree and they are looking forward to the immunity challenge when treemail arrives. Staton calls the tribe together and reads it to them:
"During yesterday's challenge, Cheryl and Robby of the Paleo tribe wandered off the trail and became lost in the woods. They were located by search parties this morning, and evacuated for medical and psychological treatment. They are in good health and full recoveries are expected. However, both have dropped out of the game and are being replaced with alternates. The Immunity Challenge will be delayed until tomorrow."
Cree exchange looks and sentiments of shock that the game has already claimed two people.
"When the Survivors were flown into this area," Zoe, the Host, explains, "they could see from the aircraft how monotonous the terrain was. Every tree looks the same and there are no sight lines to any landmarks; you could travel a thousand kilometres and hardly be able to mark your progress. The sense of being lost in a forest like this is deeply profound, and can trigger a primitive panic and paranoia.
"Robby had run wildly through the forest, inflicting scrapes, scratches and bruises upon himself, and stopping only when he had exhausted himself. During the night, in a state of terror, he hid from what he believed were a group of Cyclopes with glowing eyes who called out his name. These 'monsters' were his rescuers, equipped with helmet lights. Those of the search party did an excellent job of tracking him but without his cooperation couldn't find and help him until daybreak.
"When rescuers found Cheryl, she was ready to quit the game after her first night in the forest. She was hypothermic, covered in insect bites and had scratched herself raw in places. Cheryl said that she hadn't heard anything except for moose which made a call like 'aaarhol'. Again, she wasn't thinking clearly and had ignored the call of rescuers.
"The contestants were given a safety briefing and advised to use a buddy system. But in the end the decisions they make are their own. In previous Survivors, contestants have always underestimated what they are getting into. Survivor is not a camping vacation. Those in the game are only beginning to realize the hardships they will have to endure."
Paleo's treemail informs them that Robby and Cheryl have dropped out of the game, and to expect alternates to replace them. Shortly thereafter, their new tribemates arrive.
"What Up everyone. My name is Emmanuel but feel free to call me Eman, it's a lot shorter and easier. I'm 16 years old and I live in California. I'm looking forward to meeting all of you."
"Hey All! Tabatha here... I am sooooooo glad to be apart of this tribe. We will rock this game."
Eman and Tabatha are heartily welcomed into Paleo, the tribe knowing that they can only be an improvement over Cheryl and Robby. It's also very much appreciated to have two fresh members of their tribe to help build camp. Eman and Tabatha make use of the day's delay on the Immunity Challenge to find their place in the tribe. Everyone gets to work... building camp and building bonds and alliances.
Rick had aligned with Michelle and Shane, while Diana made an alliance with Dan and Jon. However, Rick and Diana had made a very early, secret alliance. Diana advises Rick to keep their conversations "on the downlow" when they discover that they control a majority of the tribe. "I'm gonna scout around a little," she tells him.
Diana moves on to Kelley. Finding they have a lot in common, she tells Kelley she thinks they'd make a strong team. Kelley agrees, so Diana decides to be honest (at least partially). Diana tells Kelley that she was approached by Dan and Jon. "I said I've aligned with Dan, but I'm gonna be honest, I don't trust him."
"I've been approached by Dan as well," Kelley reveals. "I said, yes, too, but I didn't commit to anything huge."
Diana suggests to keep their alliance "on the downlow" and see how it all plays out. Diana says that she thinks that Dan is smart, that Jon is a little flaky but really nice. Kelley agrees about Dan, and Diana points out that it may be good to keep him around to help in challenges. "I don't want to be too cutthroat, not at the beginning."
Kelley agrees. "For now I just want to win challenges, and vote out the people who aren't helping." Diana nods, calling this the "easy part" of the game.
Later, Diana catches up with Rick. Rick tells her that Shane came right out and asked him to an alliance, and he didn't think it was smart to say no. Diana readily admits that she doesn't care who she says 'OK' to. "I have my main alliance with you," she assures Rick. She admits to be playing a mean game and that, "I have no immediate plans to stab you in the back." They both laugh at that.
Diana wonders if she's making a target of herself by trying to be organized. Rick suggests that she lay low for a bit: "I'd almost suggest letting us lose the first challenge, but you know I'm against that sort of thing." Diana doesn't think it's a big deal to lose and vote off their weaker tribemembers. But she also wants to do the best they can.
When the sun is high, 18 year-olds Janei and Aiden take a break and try signalling each other across the lake. They'd each brought mirrors as luxury items, and think they may come in handy for a distress signal or simple communications.
At a "whopping" 36, Miriam feels like the tribal elder. She's been married for 18 years and has three sons, one of them the age of her youngest tribemate. Janei doesn't think Miriam is at all old, but admits that they have a wide range of ages and thinks the game had good casting.
Shane C had spotted some logs a ways around the lake, and deciding that it's impossible to carry them through the brush he floats them closer to Cree's camp. However, he does this by himself instead of getting any help from his tribemates. "I haven't gotten to know them well," he admits.
Aiden has taken a different approach, making a single, strong alliance. "Staton and I are really friendly. He is an awesome person, trustworthy, and has a big heart." Aiden's strategy is to stick with Staton, get to know everyone and figure out where they stand... so that he can have his thumb over them.
Staton also has an alliance with Karen, but says, "I will take Aiden over Karen 'cuz I like him more and am closer to him."
Despite an age difference, Diana and Emmanuel talk have a good time talking about family and their travels. They joke about the NY/LA rivalry. "New York City is wonderful," Diana says, "we just get cranky when people stop in the middle of the street to gawk at the buildings." Eman finds the same things for LA, only more like the freaking-out at the brown colour of the sky. Diana looks forward to the immunity challenge. "Cree needs to be taken down a notch and I'm the woman to do it."
Emmanuel mentions his conversation with Diana to Dan. "I think the four of us could do good," Dan says, suggesting that they, Diana and Jon ally. He adds, "I won't backstab you, 'cause I like you." Emmanuel promises not to backstab Dan, either. But Eman is still getting to know everyone and seeing who he can trust and depend upon.
Later, while tending the crackling fire, Emmanuel speaks with Michelle. They talk about family and music, but when the conversation turns to education and literature, Eman finds himself a bit left out. Michelle reminds him that he has plenty of "learning years" ahead of him.
Eman asks if Michelle has really spoken with anyone else in the tribe. They are both cautious about who they might have allied with, Michelle saying that, "There hasn't really been much of an opportunity to work with everyone."
Eman agrees, thinking that the tribe has to get together to win.
Eman then comes right out and asks Michelle what her strategy is. "I haven't really decided," Michelle replies. "I think right now it's just good to get to know people and kinda feel things out." Eman tells her that he wants to see how everyone competes before considering any arrangements. Michelle asks Eman, "So what do you think about maybe starting up a coalition or some kind of partnership?"
Eman says it would be a smart move. "It would be bold, seeing as I don't know what kind of player you are yet." Michelle hopes they won't have to vote for a long time. Emmanuel agrees, wanting to go into the merge with the upper hand.
"I think it's important to have a good base with at least a couple people who can kinda get each other's backs," Michelle tells him.
Eman agrees. "This game depends on a lot of trust."
"And a lot of luck," Michelle adds.
The tribes assemble for the challenge. Cree notice Tabatha and Emmanuel, the new members of Paleo, who see Cree for the first time. Cree seem confident if a bit fatigued from the hike. Paleo must be just as weary, but do their best to not show weakness before their opposition.
The challenge is a Forest Run: Survivors will have to race through the forest and answer questions about their surroundings. The questions will get harder as they go along and they may need to search for answers. Each tribe will have to submit one set of answers that they can all agree to. The tribe with the most correct answers — or the fastest tribe in the event of a tie — will win immunity and be safe for another three days.
Cree won a 15 minute head-start from the first reward challenge and go first, using their lead to carefully investigate each area and try to answer everything perfectly. When Paleo begin, they split the questions between themselves. It's the same tactic they used in the first challenge, but this time it works and they make up some ground. Towards the end, Miriam stops Cree and has everyone explain and double-check their answers. By the time they can all agree and Rob submits Cree's final answers, Paleo has finished ahead of them.
The host checks and tallies Cree's and Paleo's answers. Cree falls behind a point then evens it up two questions later; falls behind again and catches up again. The tribes are neck-and-neck. The final tally is 21 1/2 for each — a tie. And even with Cree's lead, Paleo finished first.

Paleo are ecstatic at their first win which will put them up one member against Cree. "Great job!" Kelley exclaims. "We're a great tribe, I know we're going to keep winning these. Good work everyone!"
"Good Job Mateys!!!! We rock!!" Tabatha shouts.
Michelle laughs, and explains how she was a bit behind the others. "I answered all the questions (and got most of them right) and then realized that it was already done. Congratulations either way. I'm glad we get another week to get to know each other!"
"I am so floored that we won, and by such an incredibly close margin! I was on pins and needles," Diana tells her tribemates. "What an incredible team, yay Paleo!"
"Yay! Good job guys," Nathan tells his tribe. "I'm so happy we won. Now we can all get to know each other a little better."
Back at Paleo's camp, Diana checks with Shane who had suddenly become ill before the challenge. He still has a fever but his stomach isn't hurting. Diana tells him to feel better, and Shane sends her off to celebrate with the others. "Have fun and take care of yourself," he tells her, and congratulates her on the immunity win.
Cree are demoralized, and under pressure to decide who will be leaving at Tribal Council that night.
"We did awesome at the challenge," Aiden says, "but it looks like we were too slow. Blah!"
Miriam feels a loyalty to the seven who have been contributing to the challenges, and that she has to vote for one of the three who didn't really participate. "As much as I hate to say it, I think I will have to vote for Tiffany," Miriam says in a camera confessional. "She is very sweet... I just don't think she will be able to contribute to the tribe — and right now that takes priority over any other reasons."
"My strategy is to get to know each other, and to keep the people that are doing their part," Staton says. He feels that Vince is a seat-filler, Janei seems nice but doesn't do much, and he can hardly tell that Shane C and Tiff are part of the tribe. "My vote is going for either Tiff or Shane."
Karen thinks that Cree could be a lot better, and this is a chance to make some changes. "Miriam is a nice lady who wants to figure out how to play this game, but I just don't think she's going about it in the right way. She comes off as extremely annoying and more harmful than helpful on the challenges."
Shane C shrugs as he walks along, hardly slowing down for the camera. "Who would I vote off? Tuff call — who's first in the alphabet?"
With the sky darkening, Cree put out their campfire, gather their kit, and begin the hike to Tribal Council, knowing that one of them will not be coming back.
Welcome to the first Tribal Council of Survivor Canada 3
Before tallying the votes, I'm reminding you of game rule #3, which states: "If you don't participate in a challenge and your team loses, then your vote at TC will be for yourself. If your team wins and you don't participate then it will cause your Tribe a penalty at next IC."
I am letting everyone off this time, but this rule will be enforced in the future.
Now on to the first Tribal Council of the Cree Tribe
Here are the votes, listed as they came in...
TIFFANY
My vote is for Tiffany. She's young, and seems to be somewhat inactive. She made this vote way to easy.
(Aiden)
MIRIAM
Tonight my vote is cast for Miriam. She contributes to the tribe yes, but she's way too hot-headed for me.
(Janei)
MIRIAM
No reason given.
(Rob)
MIRIAM
You slowed us down in the challenges by double-working us and I think we'd be stronger without you. Also, I offered you an alliance before and you turned me down, yet you tried to persuade my vote, and I don't appreciate that. Bye.
(Karen)
TIFFANY
Tiffany I chatted with 3 hours before the IC and said she would be there and then wasn't. I must be fair to the people that have committed to this game and choose someone who hasn't. Tiffany is my vote.
(Miriam)
TIFFANY
Okay, I hate to see someone go so soon but my vote is for Tiff. I'm sure you're a nice person but you've spoken to me maybe once, and you're very young and you missed two challenges. Best of luck to you in your endeavors.
(Staton)
MIRIAM
Well, I don't have that much information based on my limited time talking with my tribemates. But in the end I have to go with my gut and my gut tells me to trust Karen. Miriam does seem kind of sneaky in my opinion, not that it's a bad thing. It's just it seems like she's out to target me (just a hunch). So in order to ensure my safety in the game... I must vote for Miriam.
(Mike)
TIFFANY
Reason: None. I picked it at random.
(Shane C)
With only one vote left to count, we are tied at 4 votes for Miriam, and 4 votes for Tiffany. This last vote — Vince's vote did not come in — will determine who will be the first player voted out of Survivor Canada 3.
TIFFANY
If I can, I choose to vote for myself. I really don't have a clue who to vote for because they're all very nice. I usually go with the person I feel the most distant from or, if I've known some people before, people I don't know. But I don't know anyone at all from previous games, everyone's nice... and active. I think I have only had one person I haven't talked to yet. Whereas I have not particpated in a single challenge yet. I feel that it would be in everyone's best interest if I left. After all, inactive players are never any fun to work with on a tribe. I sincerely apologize about being inactive, it is because of circumstances beyond my control.
(self-vote)
Tiffany... the tribe has spoken. You have been voted out of Survivor Canada 3. We thank you for your honesty and we wish you all the very best Tiffany.

This episode is dedicated in memory of Shane's Grandmother who passed away February 7th, 2004. She will always be in your heart, Shane.
