Instructions

1.        All of the award book references are for The Canadian Lifesaving Manual except for the National Lifeguard Service award which is from the Alert Manual and the Aquatic Emergency Care award which is from this set of notes.

2.        This study guide must be fully completed and handed in.

3.        Please insure that you answer each question to the fullest that you can. No one sentence quickies unless it specifically states to do so.

4.        Remember that you cannot be penalized for having your answer too large but if you do not fully answer a question, you will be given back your study guide to do so.

5.        When answering a question, you need to write down the question and then the answer following it. Please organize your work so that it is easy to identify which section and question you are answering. If it is too difficult to read or follow your study guide, it will be returned to you so that you can fix it.

6.        You will receive a complete or incomplete mark on your study guide. You must receive a complete mark on your study guide to pass the course so please insure that it is neat & complete.

7.        Please print or type if possible. If your work is too difficult to read due to poor handwriting or printing, it will be returned to you.

Chapter 12: Aquatic Emergency Care

1.        What are the three principles of the AEC award and how do we meet them?

2.        What is the EMS system and when would you use it?

Chapter 13: Scene & Patient Assessment

1.        Give the four components in assessing a first aid scene and explain the importance of each.

2.        Outline the two types of patient consent and explain how to gain the consent of a patient.

3.        Give the five parts to the primary survey, how to assess each, and the purpose to the survey.

4.        What is the importance of a complete patient history?

5.        Identify the five vital signs and what is looked for in each.

6.        Give the five components of the head to toe survey and what you are looking for.

Chapter 14: Resuscitation

1.        Give the three methods of maintaining an airway and explain how each is done.

2.        Give the six methods of ventilating a patient and why each would be used.

3.        Discuss the four ventilation complications and how to prevent or treat each.

4.        Identify the oxygen equipment components.

5.        Describe the two types of oxygen masks and how they are used

Chapter 15: Trauma

1.        Describe the three types of head injuries with regards to the actual definition, signs & symptoms and treatment.

2.        Describe the different injury mechanisms which might indicate a spinal injury in the water or on dry land.

3.        Give the common principles in the treatment of muscle strains, sprains, joint dislocation and a limb fracture.

4.        Identify the reasons behind each of the splinting principles.

5.        Describe the similarities and differences between a sucking chest wound and rib fractures with regards to the injury mechanism, signs & symptoms, and treatment.

6.        Explain how you would be able to differentiate between abdominal injuries and chest injuries.

7.        Describe how to treat the different types of injuries that result in external bleeding.

Chapter 16: Environmental Injuries

1.        Compare heat exhaustion and heat stroke with mild and severe hypothermia with regards to mechanism, sign & symptoms, and treatment.

2.        Describe how to treat the different types of burns and frostbite.

3.        Compare the signs & symptoms of lung expansion injuries and decompression sickness and explain how you could tell them apart.

4.        Explain what causes squeeze and how to treat the injury it may cause.

5.        Explain what the DAN network is and how to use it.

Chapter 17: Medical

1.        Explain what shock is, the different injury mechanisms and how the treatment works.

2.        Describe the two different types of heart conditions and the treatment of both.

3.        Compare the signs & symptoms and treatment of a patient suffering from a stroke with a patient suffering from a head injury.
