SANSEI GOJU-RYU KARATE DO
BLACK BELT CRITERIA

Junior Black belt at age of 16 years - 3 Junior Black belts.

Senior Black belt at age of 18 years.

National Grading GASHU-KU to be attended.

Minimum of 5 years training.

Thesis as by Head Office.

Written examination prior to examination.

Good class attendance.

All fees paid to date.

Affiliated to all Provinciaal National and International Bodies.

Grading on written invitation only.

Junior and Senior requirements as for SHODAN, NIDAN and SANDAN.

 

   

It takes Two to Three Years to earn a Shodan Degree.

Shodan-ho (Jr.) Junior Black Belt

Shodan-ho Black Belt

Shodan 1st degree Black Belt, wear a Black Belt.

 

It takes at least Four Years to earn a Nidan 2nd Degree.

Nidan 2nd degree Black Belt, wears a Black Belt. They do most of the teaching in the beginning ranks.

 

It takes at lease Six Years to earn a Sandan 3rd Degree.

Sandan 3rd degree Black Belt, wear a Black Belt, referred to as Dai-Sempai.

 
It takes at least Seven to Eight Years to earn a Yodan 4th Degree.

Yodan 4th degree low level master is referred to as Renshi
Wears a belt that is Black on one side, and White and Red on the other,  
White is worn on top, and Red is worn below, around the waist.

 
It takes about Seventeen Years to achieve Godan 5th Degree.

Godan 5th degree high level master is referred to as Renshi, this grade entitles them to the honor of the name of Sensei
Wears a belt that is Black on one side, and White and Red on the other,      
Red is worn on top, and White is worn below around the waist.

 
The following grades can take a lifetime to achieve.

Rokundan 6th degree very high master Shihan referred to as Shihan
Wears a Black Belt with a Red stripe in the middle.

Kyshoe 7th & 8th degree very high masters referred to as Kyshoe
Wears a Belt that has alternating Red and White sections.

 

The following grades are above academic equivalent.

 Hanchi 9th & 10th degree Grandmasters referred to as Hanchi
They wear the solid Red Belt:Grandmaster Manny Saavedra.


NOTE: All ranks above Black Belt can be seen wearing there original
Black Belts with and without any indication of their degree.

(a good indicator is the condition of the belt, how old and worn it looks, However after a time some belts get so worn they are replaced by new ones)
