| Sound can be embedded
into a page in many different ways. It can be embedded as a
background sound which can start when the page is loaded into
your browser.
If you are using a Netscape
browser, you will not hear any back ground sound on this page.
Unfortunately this browser is not as advanced as the Internet
Explorer.
It can also be embedded as a plug
in, whereby you see a console of a kind with a play button. This
console can also be custom made.
Sound can be made to loop for as
many times as you want. Most sound files are repetitive to keep
their file size down.
The greatest difficulties with
sound is their file size. They usually run into hundreds of
kilobytes to even megabytes. For example this document (page)
may be only a few kilobytes big (without the sound), a picture
on this page may only be 1 or 30 kilobytes big. A sound file
however that runs for let's say 10 seconds may be as much as 500
kilobytes or even Megabytes. The first problem with this is that
it uses up a lot of space on your server and your space may be
limited. The other and more apparent problem is, that the sound
file will slow down the time it takes for your browser to
load this page. This can be serious as when it takes too long,
you might loose your client.
There is also streaming sound, which means
that the file does not need to be finished downloading as it
plays while it downloads. For this kind of operation you need a
server who will give this permission.
Generally, unless you are specifically
dealing with sound on your web site, sound is not a problem,
however remember - the more repetitive the sound is, the
shorter the file size.
Sound files can also be downloaded from
your web site.
