Terrae-Magi

By Jarkman

Stone-Faced Rosette
Although hinted at in the canon, the Art of Terram seems to be often under-represented in Ars Magica sagas. Likewise, there appear to have been few suggested options for House Guernicus magi apart from the inquisitor-style Intellego-specialist Quaesitor who is consistently portrayed across the various editions. In this set of articles I would like to present some ideas for playing Terrae-magi, in particular ideas for a Terram-based Mystery Cult, two small related lineages of House Guernicus magi that specialise in their Founder's original area of magical expertise, and some unusual Terram spells.

Much of the material that follows requires Houses of Hermes: True Lineages and Houses of Hermes: Mystery Cults to get the most benefit from the ideas. As The Mysteries: Revised Edition and Houses of Hermes: Societates had not been released at the time of writing, I have utilised the short summary rules for ArM5 Mystery initiation detailed at the start of Houses of Hermes: Mystery Cults, and sections related to House Flambeau and the Beloved Enemy Flaw may not necessarily fit with the "official" versions.

Special thanks to David Woods both for writing the original Guernicus section of Houses of Hermes: True Lineages, which inspired me to write these pieces, and for the encouragement that he gave me. Also, thanks to Sheila Thomas for comments on an earlier draft.
