The roots in related words often have different pronunciations. This page aims to list as many of these changes as is practical in a small space. Detailed discussions of the proceses involved are given on other pages. Throughout this list, the effects of vowel reduction can be seen. They are too frequent to point out individually.

Palatalisation: /s/ + /j/ > /š/, /z/ + /j/ > /ž/, /t/ + /j/ > /č/, /d/ + /j/ > /ĵ/
