After I left the off Broadway play “Hey Little Walter”, I realized that the only interesting thing about it was that the author, Carla Debbie Alleyne, was sixteen when she wrote it. If you are planning on seeing this play, DON’T. The play gets right into a scene, called the ghetto illusion, where Walter and his best friend Rakim are talking about being drug dealers. Walter seems to not be interested in this idea at first, but is influenced by his love interest, Nikki, who is now with someone else who deals and is making a great deal of money. As Walter and Rakim get themselves so deep in their highly paying business, Albert, Walter’s little brother, tries to get into the business because he too wants money. Now as they get more and more involved, an incident influences Rakim’s feelings on continuing dealing drugs; Walter is now the one more interested in being a drug dealer and making money. They proceed and, after following this “fascinating” plot, you can use your imagination about what happens when someone gets into a drug-related anything. If predictable plots interest you, then this one is very entertaining! While watching the production of “Hey Little Walter”, some of the scenes stood out from the rest in their mediocrity. In one scene, Nikki comes to tell Walter that she doesn’t want to see him anymore because he doesn’t have enough money (it’s a dead giveaway that this girl isn’t worth being with anyway), but he decides that making money to get her back is what he should do. So Walter now puts himself in a dangerous situation partly because a girl won’t be with him if he doesn’t. Not only did I not relate to these characters, but the actors who played them were just as boring. Don’t get me wrong, some of the actors such as the young girl who played Latoya, Walter’s little sister, was very cute! Nevertheless, I couldn’t relate to the scenes, characters, setting, or events. Furthermore, the direction of the play didn’t develop the characters well enough so that they could relate to a larger audience. Over all I found it to be poorly produced and would not encourage my fellow readers to invest your money in this play. In case my opinion of this play was unclear, I would not recommend this play. I do recommend participating in theater, just not this one.
