My Favorite Movies 7
Shane - 1966
This movie is based upon the old book of the same title.  It is about a stranger who rides into town, Shane.  He stops at a poor farm, and wins the heart of a little boy there.  He follows Shane around like his shadow.  It turns out Shane has a history--a gunslinger history.  He protects himself and the people of the town by using those skills.  It is a touching story, the classic Western.
The Mask of Zorro - 1998
This is a moderized version of the old 50's show.  Zorro continues to do his good deeds around the small Texas town.  This time he is trying to help an old friend get his daughter back, the whole time Zorro is falling for her.  It is an action-packed movie, with some romance involved as well.
The Parent Trap - 1998
This movie is a modern remake of the classic with Haley Mills.  It is very cute, and lots of fun.  Two girls meet at a summer camp, one British, one Californian.  When put up in the isolation cabin together for behavior, they realize that they are actually twins.  They decide to switch places when going home, to meet the parent they never knew.  However, things get complicated when Dad is planning on getting married again.  So, the girls bring Mom and Dad together, to complete the 'parent trap.'
Spaceballs - 1987
This is the very very funny Mel Brooks movie as a spoof on all space movies.  The humor is a little mature and risque, but still very funny!  It is basically a mix of Star Wars, some Star Trek, and a little random Mel Brooks.  A classic!
The American President - 1995
This is a very good movie.  It is about President Shepard and his relationship with lobbyist Sydney Ellen Wade.  She wants an environment bill passed, and is also his girlfriend.  He wants the crime control bill past, and he's in love with her.  The political, moral, and ethical dillema that results is one that has stood the test of time.  Even so, it is a very good move, funny and cute.
Gettysburg - 1993
This is one of the greatest war movies I've ever seen.  It is very well done, even though it only shows the most important fights of each of the three days at Gettysburg.  It is very well acted, and the effects are wonderful.  There is blood and violence (obviously) and I don't reccomend for young kids.  It is also a great history lesson as well as entertainment.  It covers the three days of battle at Gettysburg, PA: July 1-3, 1865.
Jumpin' Jack Flash - 1986
Terry manages to get herself involved in a secret service/FBI/international police operation when tinkering on her computer.  She tries to help Jack in another country get home before he is captured by the foreign adversaries.  Terry is outlandish and not typical, and adds great humor to this otherwise suspenseful movie.  It has action, comedy, romance, and spies.  It is great!
Dead Poet's Society - 1989
This is a touching story that takes place in a boy's school.  A new, young English teacher goes into class and teaches them not only about great literature but about life and living.  He had attended the school, and belonged to a group called the Dead Poet's Society, where they read poetry and let it affect them.  Now these young boys start their own DPS, much to the anger of the headmasters.  While the boys are dealing with the straight-laced school, they must also deal with their families.  It is sad and poignant, but a very powerful and touching story that will stay with you forever.
It's A Wonderful Life - 1946
This has to be the most popular movie of all time.  It is the great Christmas classic.  A man with a wife and family and having job and economic troubles wishes he was never born.  He gets his wish, and an angel, Clarence, takes him through life without him.  So many things are different, and by the end he realizes how much better his life is than this.  It is the greatest story and very touching.
1776
This is a musical about the writing of the Declaration of Independance.  It is funny and educational.  It is all based on fact, put into a fun format.  The dancing and singing is wonderful, and the whole movie is great.  I love it!
Peter Pan
The musical form of the classic children's tale is the best of every style I've seen.  It has fun songs and flying.  It is a little different when on stage, and more real.  It was always my favorite.
Evita
Based on the life of Evita Peron, many movies, operas, and musicals have been made titled "Evita."  The opera is my favorite, starring Madonna.  It has great music, and the acting/dancing is wonderful as well.  Her life is protrayed very factually, and well by Madonna.
Cinderella
My childhood favorite was the musical version of Cinderella with Leslie Ann Warren.  It is hard to locate, but I managed to find the CD soundtrack.  The music is happy and contagious.  It is great, better than any other Cinderella stories I know!
