My Favorite Movies 8
Bye Bye Birdie
This is a story about a rock n roll star of Elvis-like stature has been drafted into the army.  Before he must go off to fight for the country, Biridie is going on the Ed Sullivan show to perform a new song "One Last Kiss."  A big fan from a small town was chosen to go on to the show with him, and recieve the last kiss.  However, her boyfriend is not too pleased about that.  It is very cute but very 60's.  Watch the one with Ann-Margaret, it's the best!
The King and I
Based on the book 'Anna and the King of Siam,' this musical is about a widowed Englishwoman who travels to Siam to teach the king's children.  She brings along her son as well.  The problems, romance, and events that occur during her stay provide for a captivating and delightful musical.  My favorite is the movie one starring Yul Brenner as the king.
A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
This is the rauncy, hilarious musical based in Roman times.  It revolves around three houses next to each other in Rome: a house of flesh (Lycus), a house of an uppity family, and the house of an old man whose children were stolen in infancy.  The slave of the uppity family desperately wants his freedom, while their son desperately wants one of the women next door.  The master does not like his wife, and Lycus has gotten himself into business trouble.  See how it all works out in its hilarious way!
On the Town
This is one of my favorite musicals.  It's about three sailors in NYC for a  lay-over that lasts only 24 hours.  They sight-see, tour, walk around...and of course meet girls.  This is mainly about the guys and the girls they go around with during that time.  The movie is great, Frank Sinatra and Gene Kelly are the best!
Pippin
This is a musical about a prince Pippin who can't decide what he wants to do with life: be a soldier, be king, be in love, have children.  He cannot decide.  In the end, though, he realizes what he wants has been there all along.
The Sound of Music
This has to be the movie that every child has seen at least once.  It is the greatest, a classic by all standards.  It is the sweet, fun, romantic story of a young nun-to-be who becomes a governess for a strict ex-sailor and his mischievious children.  They fall in love, and the kids begin to love her too.  However, she wants to be a nun and he supposedly will be marrying a baroness.  It is based on the real Von Trapp family, though not everything is true in the musical.  Watch it anyway, it is wonderful!
West Side Story
This is the musical based on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.  It is modernized to deal with New York gangs..the anglos and the Puerto Ricans.  The Sharks (Ricans)' leader's sister falls in love with the best friend of the leader of the Jets (anglos).  A nasty rumble follows with deaths and anger.  However, it is a sweet story, up until the ending.
The Harvey Girls
This musical has sass and catfights.  It involves a group of girls from the east travelling west to work for the restaurant chain 'Harvey's' and some to get married.  These new good girls clash with the vetran saloon girls, and sparks fly as they fight for turf.
Viva Las Vegas
This is a fun musical about a swimming instructor and a grand prix racer.  Rusty, the swimming girl, hates the idea of Lucky (the racer boy) risking his life racing cars, and tries to have him give it up for her.  But that's not all this musical is about.  There's singing, dancing, a talent contest, and romance.   It's cute and fun, and a different kind of Elvis movie.
