My Favorite Movies 6
Cry Freedom - 1987
This is an emotional and powerful story of Stephen Biko, the South African activist against apartheid.  It is based upon his life, factual in nearly every way.  This movie's influence is almost as strong as the influence he had in real life.  It is great..but not for young children, since there is a great amount of bloody violence and hatred in it.
Sergeant Rutledge - 1960
A black officer in the Buffalo Soldiers is accused of raping and murdering a commander's daughter.  Figuring he'd be sentenced anyway, he left the base.  An attorney caught up with him, and brought him to trial.  Most of the movie is about the trial, and flashbacks of every story each witness tells.  It is lengthy, but a great film.  I reccomend it!
Rookie of the Year - 1993
A young boy breaks his arm while playing Little League, and improves his pitch by about 80 mph once it heals.  He is quickly recruited for the failing Cubs team to pitch.  This is Henry's dream, and immedietly beomes a star.  This is a hilarious baseball movie, a fun one about dreams and life.
A League of Their Own - 1992
During World War II, most of the men are away at war, including the baseball players.  To keep baseball going on the homefront, an All-American Girl's Baseball League is formed.  Girls from all over the USA come to play  for half a dozen teams.  The movie focuses on one paticular team: The Rockford Peaches.  As another baseball movie, it portrays the ups and downs of baseball as well as life when mixed with dreams.
Trading Places - 1983
This is a hilarious movie about two filthy rich old men who make a horrible bet: they think they can take one poor man off the street and turn him into a high society snob, and do the exact opposite to a high society snob.  Their bet backfires, however, when their guinea pigs learn of it.  To teach these men a lesson, they also make a bet: that they can ruin their lives in only a matter of minutes.  And they do.
Sleuth - 1972
A sick man with an obsession for odd toys invites his wife's lover over for an evening of mind games and manipulation.  It is a creepy, sick movie, but suspenseful and exciting.  It has only 2 people in it the entire time, making it for an ever more interesting film.  It is excellent as a thriller, and therefore not for young kids.  But you older kids, enjoy!
The Maltese Falcon - 1941
Sam Spade is a well-known detective in the city.  He is on a case looking for a rare and coveted Maltese Falcon statue.  Many parties want this statue, and will pay almost anything to Spade to get it.  A classic noir mystery, it is one of the best of the 40's.  I love it!
Robin Hood: Men In Tights - 1993
This is a very funny Mel Brooks, a spoof of the other Robin Hood movies.  It is hilarious...you'll be rolling around with laughter!  There is singing, dancing, laughing, and crying--from laughing so hard!  A great for the whole family.
Breakfast at Tiffany's - 1961
This is a movie that almost every single person would recognize...at least the title.  It is a great love story between two players and the lives of both.  It does not make too too much sense, but it is a great story all the same.
Men In Black - 1997
This is a wacky, fun scifi movie.  A secret underground group tracks and keeps the world safe from alien invaders.  A new man is in, a cop from a big city.  He has sass, speed, talent, and edge.  He and his partner take care of the world fighting aliens after a special cat with a mini-universe in its necklace.  There is as much humor in here as there is alien goo..but it's great!
Nancy Drew: Detective, Nancy Drew: Reporter, Nancy Drew: Trouble Shooter, Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase - 1938, 1939, 1939, 1939
These movies are each based on the girl detective from the old series.  Nancy goes through in each solving a different case with her boyfriend Ted (not Ned like in the books).  She always manages to find herself in precarious and even dangerous situations.  If you read the books, watch the movies, you'll love them!  They have a great sense of girl power, something sort of rare for the time period.  The last one is even based on one of the books written of the same title.
Pretty In Pink - 1986
A girl in high school is out of place with herself and her friends.  She has a large crush on the high school heart-throb, a popular jock.  Her best friend helps her out, and manages through some fancy talking to get her to be with him for a while.  It is a sweet and oh-so true story of high school relationships and life during that oh-so wonderful time!
Sixteen Candles - 1984
This is the great teen movie.  On her sixteenth birthday, nobody remembers it.  They're too busy with her sister's wedding, the company in town, and the exchange student.  Samantha is very upset no one remembered, and is miserable.  That day at school, in her sex test, she writes down a hunk of a senior's name for who she'd "do it with."  This senior read it, and now inquires about her.  The cute romantic story soon evolves from there.
