John DORGAN was born c. 1816 in County Cork Ireland, and died April 01, 1898 in Jessenland Twp, Sibley Co., MN, USA. One of the family bibles in this family states that he lived in Cork City, Co Cork, but to date, no evidence to this has been found.
He married Mary Ann MAHONEY or DELANEY about 1840. She was born c. 1815 also in County Cork.

Mary Ann and her four children came to the US via Liverpool to Boston aboard the ship "RISING SUN" arriving August 11, 1858. Husband John was not with them on this ship, it is assumed that he came earlier to find them a place to live.
On that ship were DORGAN family members, all of whose wherabouts are unknown, except for Mary, James, Dennis, Hannah and Bessey as listed below. (See underlined RISING SUN above for complete ships manifest which I obtained from NARA in 1998.)

It is assumed that John met with his family in Boston on their arrival in 1858, and then they went to New Auburn, Sibley County MN to farm. They show up on the 1860 MN Federal Census in New Auburn Twp, Sibley Co. with the spelling of their last name as DARGON. Also on this census are two other DARGON families, James DARGON age 40, farmer, wife Susan F. and William DARGON age 38 farmer, no family. They are listed only a few entries away from John DORGAN and his family, so again, I have assumed that these men were John's brothers.
John Dorgan and his family moved from New Auburn, Sibley Co MN to Jessenland, Sibley Co., MN sometime before the 1865 MN State Census, and raised his family there. A map from Sibley County of 1894 shows an 80 acre parcel of land registered to John Dorgan in Section 16, just south of Silver Lake, Sibley County. The Bureau of Lands Management states that he could not have owned that land, as it was part of the Sibley School land. Relatives have visited this area, and have found the land, He died in Jessenland April 01, 1898.
