Dennis Dorgan b. January 16, 1848 Co. Cork IRELAND

Denis Dorgan was born January 16, 1848 County Cork Ireland to John Dorgan and Mary Ann Mahoney.  He came to the US with his mother and siblings aboard the Ship RISING SUN August 11, 1858.  He was 10 years old when he arrived in the US, and grew up in Jessenland, Sibley County.  He married Margaret Schultz in 1874 in Henderson MN, daughter of Andrew Schultz and Anna Kumrie.  She was born in Wisconsin.

Denis Dorgan and Margaret Schultz had their first two children, John Charles Dorgan born August 20, 1875 and Rosalla Dorgan born February 02, 1877 in Henderson MN.  They moved to Grand Forks Co. in 1878 where the rest of their family was born. 

Denis Dorgan worked as a wheat Buyer, Grand Forks Roller Mills 22 N 4th Grand Forks ND 1889, 1890, 1891, 1892.  He was also a clerk at the M. Ruth Grocery Store in Grand Forks City for a while.  He was Naturalized in 1890 in Grand Forks. 

Denis died February 3, 1916 in Grand Forks ND.  He had become ill while staking a claim at East Grand Forks, MN, and died shortly after. Wife Margaret Schultz died in 1903.  

1880 Federal Census lists Dennis Dorgin, age 31, born in Ireland, wife Margaret, age 26, born in Wisconsin, John C, son age 5, born in Minnesota, Rosella, daughter age 3, born in Minnesota, Mary A, daughter age 5 months, born in Dakota, and Mary Schultz, sister-in-law age 18, born in Minnesota all living in Grand Forks, Grand Forks County, Dakota Territory.

DENNIS DORGAN, 68, OLD SETTLER, DIES


Pioneer Who Became Ill While Holding Down Claim Passes Away at Local Hospital.
Dennis Dorgan, aged 68, pioneer resident of Grand Forks county, owner of a farm five miles south of the city, died last evening at 7 o'clock at a local hospital from a complication of internal diseases.
Mr. Dorgan was taken to the hospital last Friday. He was holding down a piece of land in the woods of Minnesota when he became ill. Cancer is believed to have been mainly responsible for his death.  He was one of the early settles of the county, coming here from St. Paul. Many years ago he worked on the Mississippi steamboats out of that city. For a time he was employed at the McCormick mill here, and also worked for years at the M. Ruth grocery, which was situated where the Council cigar store now stands on South Third Street. Later he went into farming, and prospered.
Deceased is survived by eight children, John, Dennis and Frank, Mrs. Al. Wilson, Mrs. W. E. Russell, Mrs. Arthur Gregoire, Mrs. Albert Stevens, Mrs. J. A. Stands, and one brother, James Dorgan, all of whom were at his bedside when the end came.
The remains will lie in state at Norman's undertaking parlours. Funeral services will be held Sunday morning from St. Mary's Catholic Church.
