July Frank Ryan is found at the bottom of a stairwell at Riverside Hospital and is in critical condition. Mary Ryan meets reporter Jack Fenelli. Bucky Carter begins to pursue Faith Coleridge. Nell Beaulac arrives to become a doctor at Riverside Hospital, with her estranged husband Seneca arriving soon afterwards.

August Nell and Ed Coleridge grow close, despite the pleas of her husband, Seneca. Although at first Frank's condition deteriorated, it gradually began to improve and he regained consciousness. Faith and Bucky's relationship continues to be rocky. Jack and Mary begin to open up to each other.

September Frank and Delia deal with the fact that she tried to kill him. Mary becomes very upset with Jack after he writes a scathing article about Frank. Seneca becomes head of neurology. Bucky and Ed discover Nell has a terminal medical condition.

October Seneca is shocked when he finds out about Nell's condition. Jack discovers that Frank has been having an affair with Jill Coleridge. This discovery greatly shocks Mary. Bucky and Faith decide to become 'just friends' as Faith begins to develop feelings for Pat Ryan. Frank works feverishly to partly recover in time for a political rally.

November After a successful rally, Frank wins the election for city councilman. One of Nell's aneurysms (the operable one) leaks, requiring immediate surgery. Mary and Jack make love for the first time, which upsets her family. Faith and Pat become involved with each other, while Kenneth Castle starts to obsess over her. Nick Szabo finds out about Jill and Frank's affair.

December Seneca and Nell grow close once again. When word spreads around Riverside about Frank's affair, his political career is in jeopardy. However, Delia saves it -- while forcing Frank to stay married to her! Kenneth's obsession with Faith becomes more disturbing. Jill finally gives up Frank to Delia. Meanwhile, Seneca decides not to renew Roger's contract with the hospital due to his gambling problem.
