poor education
poor health
poor housing
low self-respect
crime
poverty

14. Poverty

About 35 million Americans are considered to be poor
Poverty is worse among blacks and Hispanics
1 in 10 White people is poor
1 in 3 Black people is poor
1 in 4 Hispanic people is poor
Many cannot afford their basic needs (food, housing and clothing)
Many blacks and Hispanics cannot afford health care and rely on Medicaid
Many are single parent families who rely on food stamps, school lunch programmes and AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children)

15. Housing - Ghetto

Housing in a Ghetto tends to be of a poor standard.
Many houses are damp with no central heating or air conditioning.
Poor sanitation.
Streets are not cleaned and rubbish is not regularly collected because the City Government cannot afford it.
Play parks are vandalised so kids play in street.
Rent is cheap so only the poorest of society have to live there

16. Housing - Inner City Apartment

Apartments have doormen to control who gets in.
Security cameras in corridors and stairs.
Emergency security buttons connected to doormen and police.
Apartments kept clean by maids and block kept clean by janitors
Only very rich businessmen, lawyers, politicians, doctors and entertainers can afford to live here
May have a swimming pool, sun lounge, fitness suite and even a garden on the roof

17. Health

The US does not have a national health service which is free for everyone like the UK
The majority of Americans have private health insurance. The main insurance companies are Blue Cross and Blue Shield
It will cost $10 000 a year for a family of 4 in New York to get full health and dental care.
The poorest groups cannot afford health insurance and rely on Medicaid (for poor) and Medicare (for elderly). These are funded by the government.
Hospitals which are funded by the government do not get enough money so waiting lists are long and they have staff shortages.
As a result of being uninsured you will not get routine checks and will only be treated when you are seriously ill.
Black life expectancy is 5 years less than that for whites.
The infant mortality rates for Blacks is 2.5 times that for Whites
