Sensory Activities

Mom says sensory activities are very important for me. As and when possible, we play and engage in sensory activities to help strengthen my sensory processing skills. Most of the activities that we do are adopted from "The Out-of-Sync Child Has Fun - Activities for kids with sensory integration dysfunction" by Carol Stock Kranowitz.

We do make some changes or simplify the games to suit ourselves. Some of my favourites are:

Paper Balls Basket

Require: old newspaper/magazines, a wastebasket

What we did:

1. We tore out pages from newspaper and magazines

2. Crumpled them quickly, keeping our arms straight at the sides

3. Toss paper balls into a wastebasket

This will help strength my fine motor skills necessary for writing.

Hold Up the Wall

Require: a wall

What we did:

1. Pressed our hands against the wall with all our strength for about 15 counts or more. We usually count to 20. (I picked up my counting from this activity!)

2. Sometimes, we pressed our other body parts instead - head & back, hips and shoulders, and also our feet (we will have to lie on the floor to do that)

3. While holding up the wall, mom would scream out loud "Oh my goodness, the wall is falling down. Quick! Let's push it with our hands to keep it up."

Mom usually get me to do this whenever she sense a meltdown coming.

Shopping Game

Require: laundry tub, heavy groceries (durable, non-perishable & tightly sealed) and a shopping list.

What we did:

1. Mom prepared a list of grocery items (we had bag of beans, bottle of oil, can drinks, bottle drinks, bottle of millet & a big book)

2.Tim & I then went on a hunt round the house to find the items that matches our list.

3. We pushed the laundry basket around to gather the groceries.

Good for our muscle tone.

No Mess Messy Play

Require: finger paints (red, blue & yellow), ziplock bag.

What we did:

1. Mom put blobs of paint into ziplock bags (yellow & red, blue & green, yellow & blue)

2. We were allowed to squish the blobs together to see the formation of seconday colours

(I am still learning but Tim was good at it!).

3. We can also practise writing letters and numbers through the plastic.

This has improved my tactile sense tremendously. I should really thank Grace yiyi for getting me the Marabu finger paints for my 2nd birthday.

File Folder/Felt Board Games

Yiyi made some file folder and felt board games for Ethan and I based on different themes. She says I am really good at this.

some of my favourite file folder games

- gingerbread man, animal homes etc.

Yiyi self made these felt pieces for story telling. Can you see the 3 little pigs and their mama?

Tim also drew  and coloured some of the pieces for our felt board. Yiyi found these special "hi materials" that could stick on very well to the felt board.

Montessori Phonics

Mom started me on Montessori Phonics after she went to the workshop with Tim. We usually do it for only about 3 to 5 minutes daily. Nothing more. Otherwise I will lose interest. I also love to listen to "ants on the apple" phonics CD. We dance to the rhyme sometimes. I can recognise some of the letters already. Mom is so proud of me.

me trying my hands at the sandpaper letters and movable alphabets

Sometimes Tim and I

 worked together.

The movable alphabets are really expensive...but nothing can stop our  handy dandy dad from making our very own set. Cost us...alot less but dear mom and dad stayed up a few  nights  to get it done.
