About Us

The Rotary Club of Dorchester Casterbridge welcomes you. We are a friendly evening club, which was chartered in September 1989. There are two Rotary Clubs in the town; the other being Dorchester Club, a Monday lunch-time group that also meets at the Wessex Royale Hotel. Both clubs are dual gender.

The Club derives its name from Thomas Hardy, a local author who wrote extensively about the area, often using fictional place names.  In his works he refers to Dorchester as ‘Casterbridge’.  In addition to the Hardy connections, Dorset was also the home of poet, William Barnes and the Puritan minister, John White (whose Pilgrims sailed to the New World and established Dorchester in Massachusetts).  Dorset also boasts the largest Iron Age hill fort in England, as well as extensive Roman remains.   More recently, Dorchester has become the home of Poundbury – the revolutionary housing concept pioneered by HRH The Prince of Wales.

The Club is linked with Rennes du Guesculin, and regular exchanges have taken place for several years.

The Rotary Club of Dorchester Casterbridge is very active with   a full programme of social and community service activities.     Our two main functions are the Christmas Collection and the   Music Festival.  In addition to those events, we have done street collecting for a variety of local charities as well as Rotary Projects, such as PolioPlus.

The Club is an active participant in RIBI initiatives.  One of the best projects is the ‘Coping with Life’ series of CDs.  A copy of the latest edition, ‘Coping with Citizenship’, has been given to every school in Dorchester by the Club.
