| I'd already cleaned and inspected the shaft drive components so it was simply a regrease, slipping it all into the swingarm and then bolting it back to the diff. All the nuts and washers were painted either black or silver. I was debating about getting them cad plated but decided that I didn't want to get that carried away. The fact that the nearest plater is about 1800 km away helped with that desision!! I havn't fitted the brake components to the diff yet because I still have to get the shoes relined. All the pads (including the spares) are worn to the rivets. The drums on the wheels however are not grooved and are round and true so that is something that I won't have to worry about. |
| 26-6-2001 I've finally finished the diff and swingarm. I ended up using a semi polished "bead blast" finish on the diff housing. The full polished look didn't seem to fit the bike too well. The bead blast finish was achieved by using a rust de-scaling tool fitted to the compressor.(sorry neighbours!) This tool is basically lots of thin rods that "hammer" the surface that it's applied to. I then used a wire wheel attachment on the electric drill to give it a semi glazed finish. I'm happy with the result but it's probably still a bit shiny for some people's tastes. The reassembly of the diff was fairly simple, again using boiling water in a pan to expand the cases for bearing re fit. The bearings were in good condition and I'm wondering if somebody had already replaced them at some stage. The only tricky bit was fitting the 23 loose bearing rollers to the crown wheel shaft. I used light grease to hold them on but was having nightmares on how long it would take crawling around on the garage floor to find them if they went a.w.o.l. I made a new gasket for the cover and also one for where the swingarm attaches to the diff. The swingarm repaint went well except for an over generous application of paint on the last coat. This meant a hard rub down to get rid of the run marks and then an extra couple of coats. |
