Role of Teaching Temperance, Social and Personal Restraint

Spiritual and body relaxation are often brought up by meditation. When such a state is realized by a worshiper, temperance in his ideas, his deeds and his feelings follows normally. Some miracles can also be explained in a rational way by that deep spiritual modification, sometimes called trance, that some worshipers have known. Jesus, himself, before his arrest and during his crucifixcion is said to have attained those high spiritual levels as did also many saints. In almost the same way, some kinds of Yoga lead to some higher states of mind. I have been invited, in 1989, in a pentecostist Church of Port-au-Prince. Have called up my attention, during the service, the many gesticulations of the worshipers who seemingly lived briefs instants of trance. Too tight and too puffed up to follow the example, I realised however how much benefic this religious service was for them. In the episcopal All Angels church of eighty-third street in Manhattan, I have also attended, during the year 1993, similar enjoyable, nevertheless, deeply sincere religious service. In the lutherian West End Collegiate church of seventy-seven street, in Manhattan, there is a weekly Tuesday vesper prayer,, in all quietness and in all meditation,, led by an hearty pastor and (or) empathetic elders. During those prayers, the worshipers can voice their supplications and their wishes so that all the Church could pray with them and for them.
