I think this is important because, let's face it, I am a skeptic. Lyrics are my favorite part of the music and I can rarely listen to lyrics without wondering whether the artist is being insincere. All of the most respected lyricists (Dylan, Lennon, Kurt, Jim) have most of their songs interpreted ten billion different ways. And that's not bad, maybe that's how good lyrics ought to be. But for me I can't just accept the meaning to be whatever I think the song is about. I want songs to actually impart ideas to me coming from somewhere other than myself. So I really wish every songwriter would explain honestly what their songs are about, lest I be forever lost. Don't get me wrong, just because I say a song is about one thing DOESN'T mean that's what it's about! The way I feel is: once a song is written and sent out into the world, the author loses exclusive jurisdiction over the meaning. I'm sure people could hear my songs and come up for much superior meanings for them, the same way I'm sure has happened in the past. These writings are just what I meant with these songs, incase you are wondering or incase you want to fact-check my sincerity. Also, I try to spare as few facts as possible, so, like, don't freak out. Maybe I shouldn't talk about people in the context of my songs, but aside from trying to prove my sincerity I also want to do this because I'm very proud of these songs and I want to explain where they came from. Probably the biggest reason why I write songs is to flash-freeze ideas or feelings that I have, so naturally I am proud of what they're about.
