With proper socialization, training and handling, these birds make excellent pets.

CAGING REQUIREMENTS: These active little birds need as much room as possible.
Minimum Cage Size 24" x 32" and LARGER is much preferred.
PERSONALITY:
This is an active, intelligent, curious, friendly, affectionate, sweet and comical little bird.  Many learn to talk quite young and develop large vocabularies.  Their active, silly personalities will win your heart and entertain you for hours.  Well socialized Illiger's are generally accepting of strangers and change, and make excellent family pets.   Rarely seen in the pet trade, this most colorful of the Mini-Macaws is gradually becoming more and more popular as a pet bird, as people become familiar with them.
Their comical antics and gentle temperment will win your heart.
*A personal favorite of ours*

About Illiger Coloring -
many babies/juveniles will sport a red forehead while others will not.
(see photo above) Oftentimes this red coloring  disappears by one year of age, but returns at maturity sometime between 3 and 5 years of age.  The amount of Red on the forehead can vary from a very small strip to a large patch.  The amount of Red on the forehead as a juvenile seems to have no bearing on the amount of Red as an adult.  Even young Illiger's with no red on their forehead (such as the baby in the center in the photo above) will very likely sport a red forehead as an adult.

Breeding Season:  Spring/Summer (babies generally hatched May, June & July)
Weaning Age:
16-20 weeks.
Males Available to Pet Homes
At this time Females are very limited and available to serious breeders only.
