BLUE & GOLD MACAW
SIZE: 32-34 inches, half of which is tail.
LIFESPAN: 50-80+ Years
LOUDNESS FACTOR:
Can be and often are very loud.
Definately not an Apartment or Communal Dwelling candidate.

DIET:
Pellets, Fresh Vegetables, Sprouts, Fresh Fruit, High Quality Nuts,
Healthy People food, on a daily basis.

TALKING ABILITY:
Good. Will learn a variety of words and phrases and can become quite
talented talkers with training.

PET POTENTIAL: EXCELLENT.
With proper socialization, training and handling,
Blue & Gold Macaws make excellent pets.

CAGING REQUIREMENTS:  Large Macaws require a cage of at lease 30" x 40" of sturdy
powder coated, wrought iron construction.  A LARGER cage is preferred.
PERSONALITY:
This is an active, intelligent, curious, friendly, affectionate, loud and destructive bird.
How's that for variety! They are voracious chewers and must have a never ending supply of hard and soft
chew toys.  Perches will need to be replaced often! Their active, silly personalities will win your heart and
entertain you for hours.  Well socialized Blue & Gold's are generally accepting of strangers and change,
and will make a good family bird.  Because of their size, however, boundaries must be set and training must
be consistent.  As with all Large Macaw's they are
NOT recommended for Children.
In all cases, children and parrots should be closely supervised when interacting with birds.
Blue & Golds are extremely intelligent, highly active and require much physical and mental stimulation.
They can be very demanding and manipulative.  In addition, if the large beak intimidates you, the bird will
know it and this is probably the number 1 cause of Nippy Macaws, and the nightmare stories often heard
about these wonderful birds.  Blue & Golds of both sexes can become cranky and even nippy during breeding
season (you have about 5 years) and/or during Moulting.   It is best to recognize this for what it is, respect
your Macaw's desire to be left alone and trust that it will pass.

IF LARGE BEAKS INTIMIDATE YOU -- THIS IS NOT THE BIRD FOR YOU
IF LOUD NOISE BOTHERS YOU -- THIS IS NOT THE BIRD FOR YOU

Breeding Season:  Spring/Summer (babies generally hatched March through July)
Weaning Age: 16-24 weeks
