NOTTINGHAMSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL ELECTIONS on THURSDAY 4th JUNE 2009
Congratulations to Mark Spencer and Chris Barnfather
Here is his Chris's report on the result.
"With reference to the above I just wanted to personally thank all those who gave me such tremendous support at the local elections on Thursday. The turnout was in the region of 42.5% which considering the current disillusionment with the Westminster MPs expenses debacle and no alignment to a General Election was pretty good.
I won with almost 74% of the vote and as you are all aware by now we took control at County Hall for the first time in 28 years with a total of 35 seats against Labour's 13, Liberal Democrats 9 and a mixture of Mansfield Independent Form 6, Selston Independent Forum 1, UKIP 1 and independent Independents 2!!
This gives us, as a Conservative administration, a massive margin against Labour who lost a total of 22 seats and gives us an overall working majority of 3.
This result is entirely down to your support and turn-out when it mattered for which I am most grateful.
I would also like to take this opportunity to publicly express my gratitude to Joe Lonergan, my predecessor, my agent, my mentor and my friend who bequeathed me a tremendous well of support and good will across the whole Division by the way in which he conducted himself during his sixteen years representing the people of the Newstead Division with unwavering enthusiasm, commitment and professionalism.
Kind Regards Chris"
There has been excellent support from local organisations. A new group of canvassers are going out on Tuesday’s and Saturday’s and are reporting good feedback on the doorstep. They had a great result in Hucknall securing 2 County Councillors. Sherwood area has now only 1 Labour Councillor.
Mark Spencer is Cabinet Member without port folio. Andy Stewart & Mick Murphy are Cabinet members. Chris Barnfather is Deputy Whip and on the Police Authority. Kevin Rostance is also a Deputy Whip and on the Fire Authority. In Gedling Colin Powell has been appointed as Vice Chairman of the Personnel Committee.
