LAG B'OMER
This is the day that two things happened:
1) A small boy named akiva, never learned torah. He married a girl from a rich family and they were both banned  from her father's home. At fourty, in the forest, he noticed water dripping on a rock. Due to erosion after many years the water had made a hole  in the rock. When akiva saw this, he said to himself, I am like that rock. I too can learn torah,
it's never too late to learn torah. He went to learn and came back with many followers as people realized how great this man became. When he passed away, his students all took his teachings in different ways and had a hard time getting along with one another. Hashem; upset with what he saw; send a plague and the students began dying. From after Passover they died each day yet on Lag b'omer they stopped.
2) Rabbi Shimon Bar yochai was a holy rabbi who taught jews Torah. Under the Romans, this was not allowed and he was soon placed under arrest. Word got to him before the soilders did and he ran with his son to hide. They hid in a cave for thirteen years (12+1 more) eating only carrob (a tree that sprouted right nex to a stream outside the cave) and water. Such was the sacrifice to learn Torah. He was a great and holy man and on Lag B'omer he passed away. Yet before he passed away he asked that this day be a great and happy day. A day when we have bonfires and picnics. A day of joy and fun. and so it is.
