This is a very easy story to act out, simply because they can all FEEL it. take your tables (two together) and put butcher paper, or a blanket hanging over the sides. have the children take turns to go in there and feel what it is like to be in a cave, (dark, quiet) you can put a bucket of water next to it and have some carrob so the children can taste what rabbi shimon and his son lived on. I have heard that you can also make a cave in your classroom or on your deck . with chicken wire. shape it like a cave and then collect twigs, leaves with your class and cover it. this sounds like a great cave. The Akiva story is a bit harder..

**Cave- where rabbi shimon lived
**TO LOVE A FELLOW JEW
**TEACHING THE STORY
To make just a sample of the story of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai take a paper bag and cut the top off.turn it over and cut a door, that can be your cave. for water, (the stream right next to the cave) cut strips of blue tissue paper (few different shades of blue. ) and have the children glue it next to it. you can even put a piece of carrob on the paper plate (oh this should all be on a paper plate) so they have the complete picture of how he lived. You can use a paper bowl for the cave too. paint it brown. cut out a door.
This is a good place to bring this topic in. It is needed by kids and a great topic to discuss. You can even tell them about their neshamah (especially if they already know about it from modeh ani) say ' we are all special cuz we all have a neshamah' ' all jews are special ' 'hashem loves us all and is happy when we all love each other.' discuss what makes another person happy/sad. some mitzvos we can do. If you have someone who is sick, call them, or send a card. a project for ahavas yisroel, i dont know... but if youre children are old enuf you can make some type of big heart and everytime a child does something nice, you put it on minature heart and tape it on the big heart. (similar to a mitzva tree).

BE BRAVE! MAKE A REAL LIVE CAVE IN YOUR CLASSROOM Buy chicken wire. it is a great thing.(buy it at any hardware store) you form it and it stays.make a cave (as you see) make a tree in the background and a river on the side (blue color paper) put some rocks and sticks and two books with aleph bet inside. let the kids act out the story. a easier to get cave but not as childproof. take a big piece of butcher paper and let the kids decorate it. put it on top of a round little table. cutting out a door and leaving that as a cave.. This cave you can't see what is going on inside :)!
**RAINBOW
Rainbow: to remember that during the time of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai there was never a rainbow, since he protected the world from punishment with his merit. Use colored squares of tissue paper glued to wax paper cut to the shape of a rainbow and it can be hung on the window and the sun shines through nicely.
