Lost in the Sahel

Set in a region where the first few sand dunes and nomads begin to appear, the village of Oursi gives a foretaste of the Saharan landscape and life in the oases. Just like the rest of the Sahelian region, the little Burkinabé villages scattered throughout the north-east inhabited by Tuaregs, Fulani and Songhai, periodically suffers the ravages of droughts and relentless annual desertification. This process has been going on for thousands of years and is to blame for having transformed the fertile Saharan region into an immense, arid zone. The yellow, sandy area on maps of Africa is advancing further and further towards the Sub-Saharan countries like Burkina Faso and neigbouring Mali and Niger.
