Hippopotamus Hunting
If you've never been on the water with hippos you'll find them a little more aggressive and dangerous than you thought. Indeed, there are more people killed in Africa every year by hippos than by any other animal. But, hippopotami only present a danger to man if man bothers the hippos by bumping into them in a canoe or by inadvertently catching a baby hippo in fishing nets. Such cases have occurred, restlting in several fatal accidents. If disturbed they can become very dangerous and have even been known to up-turn boats and crush the occupants with their powerful jaws. Generally, however, hippos have a harmonious relationship with fishermen who keep a respectful distance. In fact fishermen welcome the presence of hippos in the pools. As these large animals digest in the water, their excrement acts as a natural fertilizer and thereby greatly multiplies the number of fish in the pools.
