This is a "sequel" (see the originality section for more information) to Secret of Mana:-
Story
The story is set on another
world. The goddess of Mana turns herself into a tree or something,
and falls asleep for some time. Mana disappears from the planet, and the
tree starts to wither, which causes problems everywhere. This is where
the story begins......
Game
The game starts with an intro, then
you can load an old save-game or start a new one. When you start a new
one, you have a choice of 6 characters, where you can choose 3 to be in
your adventure. When you have got into the game, you'll find the characters
all join together, and can choose which one to use, although the other
characters will still be with you. In fights, they will be controlled by
the SNES. The menu system is impressive, and when you use an item, a screen
much like the prequel's item screen comes up.
I quite like the touch where if
someone is in the way, you can push them along. I hate it in games where
people walk in front of you, and you have to wait for them to move out
of the way. I wont say any more, except if you are at all interested, try
your best to get this game!
Gameplay
Wow, another massive Square
game. A good thing about this game is there are 6 characters, and you choose
which 3 are going to be in this adventure. They all meet up somehow near
the start. It's great fun, and not too hard to understand. Getting into
this game is easy. There aren't really enough puzzles but there are lots
of opponents to smash in. Random battles aren't a problem; the battles
are like Zelda. But I really do like this game, and must find time to play
it properly sometime! From what I've seen, it has to have 9.5/10!
Graphics
It's even better than the prequel,
even in comparison with the PS game Alundra. It's very well detailed, and has lots of cut-scenes, so it gets a great 9/10.
Sound
SFX isn't bad. The music tracks are improved from the sequel too, so I'll give it 8/10.
The Secret of Mana 2 is the 3rd in the Secret of Mana series in Japan, but only 1 has been officially released anywhere other than Japan (as far as I know). I don't think Square really added too much to this one compared to our release (Secret of Mana 1). Until I find out about anything else, Secret of Mana 2 gets just 3/10 because of it's similarity with it's "prequel", and it's "prequel"'s similarity with Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past for the SNES. Or something like that.
Price
I have no idea really. You will have difficulty importing the original from Japan, which may cost you quite a bit, and then you have to find the translation patch and rom.
This got 8/10!
This was last updated 3/2/2001. I'll try to update it often.
