ALUNDRA

Story

Alundra is a nice chap who has big eyes and pointy ears (People who have played Zelda for the GB or Zelda for the SNES will notice he looks incredibly like Link and the puzzles will make you think "Now where have I seen that before?" ....). He wants to defeat this evil bloke - Melzas. Melzas is out to give everyone nightmares, so who better to stop him than Alundra, with his special power of changing peoples' dreams? Well, anyway, you get on a nice ship to sail to Inoa (an ancient guardian tells you to). Now after some sleep (nightmares), you spring into action, to start the game.

Game

Well, the game starts with an impressive Manga - style cartoon intro. Then when you finally start the game, you appear as Alundra. First I checked out the controls. They seemed quite easy, even though I wasn't able to use half the moves at that point. Later you can get better swords, flails, bows, magic rods, etc. I looked all of the way around the great, well drawn ship to find other characters to interact with. About seven people were on the ship. All of them have been made by Miyoshi Tamaki. To progress, you need to talk to everyone and look everywhere. After a sequence where the ancient guardian talks to you (that takes forever to finish), you wake up to find the ship wobbling everywhere. Not realizing that the camera angle hides the way, I used a Zelda technique - if a crack (you'll know what crack I'm on about if you play it) isn't already broken, you have no bombs and its breakable, run and slam it. But as it was wobbling everywhere (which after a while becomes quite annoying), Alundra couldn't run in a straight line. After about 5 minutes, I worked it out. Then, when I had at last got outside a little animationy thing happens which I wont give away. Then you appear in Inoa village where a nice bloke called Jess takes you into his house to temporarily live. I may type more another time so please come and visit me later! It's definately worth 9/10. I have completed the game, so I am sure that it's worth it.

Gameplay

After reading the game section, you will realize that I enjoyed it. Alundra goes into many peoples' dreams and many dungeons, making this a very big game. It seems as big as Final Fantasy VII. This adds to the fun of Alundra - you don't know how much more you need to do or what's next. The controls are very easy to get into. The logical puzzles can be quite difficult and may bore you. You can very easily get into this game and you will keep coming back unless you are very stuck. I give it 9/10.

Graphics

This game is totally 2D. Gameplay is the point Climax have worked on. But don't be put off - the world of Alundra is amazingly well detailed and cleverly put together. It is bright and colourful (I begin to wonder about the artists of Zelda...). From me it gets 8/10.

Sound

Music can get annoying but sounds are otherwise great. For this, I give it 8/10.

Originality

This idea hasn't been used for a while, but it has still been used on both Zelda for the GB and Zelda for the SNES. In fact, it is so similar I'll only give it 6/10.

Price

The price of this was normally £40. After playing it, I'd say that it's definitely worth it, but I managed to get the original game in the original casing on sale for £20! If you're lucky enough to find it now, it may only be about £10.

This gets 8/10!

You could contact Psygnosis (the publisher) on (UK) 0151 282 3000. I've never tried it, so they might still be there.

This was last updated 2/12/2001. It probably wont need updating again.
