Step 5) Look back at the list you made in Step 1.  Beside each idea on the list, write down the names of any animals that would have this trait.

For example, if you wrote "someone who would cuddle with me", you would now write "dog" and "cat" beside it.

Which animal meets the most points on your list?

Are you happy with that choice of animal?

Now is the time to decide which pet you would like to adopt!  If your group is having trouble deciding on a pet, take a vote.

Step 6) Click here to learn about the many jobs of a Humane Society.  Click here to learn about the difference between a Humane Society and a pet store.  Everyone in your group should read this information.

Decide where you would adopt this animal from: a pet store, or your local Humane Society or SPCA?  Explain why.  (Write 3 - 5 sentences for this.)

Step 7) Make a list of the items you will need to buy to care for this pet.  Look in some pet store flyers (or at the Petcetera and PetSmart websites) to find out the cost for each item.  Write the cost beside the items on your list.

There are some things your pet needs that you can't buy at a pet store.  Click
here to find out more about these costs, and add them to your list.

Step 8) Make a list of the responsibilities of caring for this pet.  Put a check mark beside the ones that you, the kids, will be able to do.  Circle the ones that your parents would need to do.

Remember:  One responsibility of caring for a pet is making sure they have the proper health care.  This includes spay or neuter surgery, regular vaccinations, and a vet check-up at least once a year.  Don't forget to add these to your list of responsibilities!

Step 9) Decide on a way to present this information to your parents.

You may choose to create a poster, write a persuasive letter, give a speech, make a collage of information and pictures, create a brochure, or come up with something else that you think will work!

Just make sure you include all the important information:

- What kind of animal is it?  (Include a description)
  - Where would you adopt it from?  (Explain why)
  - What would be the costs of owning this animal?
  - What responsibilities would the group of you take care of?
  - What responsibilities would your parents need to take care of?
  - Why do you think this is the best pet for your family?
  - And anything else that you find interesting or important!
