There's more to pet care than what you can buy at a pet store...
Pets need health care just like people do.  A veterinarian is a doctor for animals, and they will be your pet's best friend (besides you, of course).  Pet owners need to pay for their pet's health care, even if it's just a check-up.  When you are thinking about pet care costs, don't forget health care!
Check-Ups ($50 or more per year)

Your pet should visit the vet at least once a year.  Even if your pet doesn't seem sick, it is important to take it to the vet clinic for a regular check-up.
Vaccinations ($40 or more per year)

Pets need vaccinations to protect them from illnesses.  Some people call vaccinations "shots" or "needles", but they all mean the same thing.  The vet will be able to tell you when your pet needs to update its vaccinations to stay healthy as can be.
Emergencies (varies)

If your pet is hurt or sick, you must get it the proper veterinary care.  This may cost a lot of money.  That's the price you have to pay to care for a friend like this.
