Taxis are readily available all around the city unless it is a major holiday or during the Festival Cervantino. A cab to the bus station (Central de Autobus) is about 20 pesos from centro downtown. Anywhere else around town is usually 15 - 20 pesos as of Jan/2001. The best places to catch a taxi in centro are in front of Teatro Principal, on Calle Alonso behind Hotel San Diego, or in Plaza de la Paz.
The central bus station is located at the entrance to the city close to the tolls booths. It costs about 20 pesos for a taxi to the terminal or 2 pesos for a bus ride. If you are going from centro to the bus terminal, and you want to get a seat on the bus, the best place to catch it is at Teatro Principal. It usually arrives there about five minutes after the hour and half hour. Then it proceeds to the next major stop at Plaza Reforma and arrives there at a quarter after the hour and a quarter til the hour.
From Central you can get to Leon in about 30 minutes for 24 pesos on
Flecha Amarilla or Primera Plus. From Leon you can get to nearly anyplace in Mexico. From Guanajuato you can also go to several close by destinations such as San Miguel, Dolores Hidalgo, Irapauto, etc, for very reasonable prices. A first class bus, Primera Plus, will cost a few pesos more and is worth it if the ride is over an hour or so. Otherwise the regular Flecha Amarillo service is still good and has much more frequent service.
You can purchase tickets at travel agencies  or at the bus terminal.
Guanajauto is serviced by the Bajio International Airport in Leon which is about 20 minutes and 200 pesos from GTO. The citycode is BJX. Several major carriers fly into BJX such as American Airlines from Dallas/Ft Worth, Continental Airlines from Houston and of course all the major Mexican carriers can connect you to Mexico City.
For private shuttle service to and from the airport, other cities for shopping, errands or whatever, contact Mr. Ramiro Gutierrez at Computel. He is a wealth of information and resources around the city and can probably help you find whatever you need. His home phone number is: 732-3549 or work phone: 732-0608.
