| BEFORE HE WAS EVEN BORN Daniel was diagnosed with a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) at 24 weeks gestation. It was found on a routine Ultrasound, when the technician could not find all four chambers of the heart. This is a relatively common heart defect, and basically means that the septum between the two bottom chambers (Ventricles) is incomplete. Thisis sometimes reffered to by people as "a hole in the heart." From this ulrasound, Daniel's seemed severe. Details VSD |
| We were reffered to a Pediatric Cardiologist, Dr. Ann Cavanaugh, who did an fetal echocardiogram of Daniel's and Donovan's hearts. The VSD WAS confirmed. I know several mothers online whose child has a similar one and has never had to have surgery. Many of these close up on there own. The Cardioligist believed Danile's would most certainly require surgery. But the VSD was not her MAIN concern. Dr. Cavanaugh was also fairly certain that Daniel had a Coarctation of the Aorta. A VERY serious congenital heart defect. It cannot be fully diagnosed until after the baby is born. We were very lucky that the VSD was seen on a routine ultrasound and that the cardiologist also looked for the Coarctation. Details Coarctation. |
