ONLY TWO DAYS OLD Daniel's first surgery was performed when he was only 4lbs. 7oz. We had hoped that I could carry the twins further along (they were 32 weeks gestation) so that he could weigh 6 pounds or more. If he had been bigger the surgeon, Dr. Drinkwater, could've repaired both the VSD and the Coarctation concurrently. Also because of his small size the incision was made under his arm pit from front to back, instead of down his chest. After the Coarctation repair, a band was place on his pulmonary artery to help divert blood flow, and he would have surgery later for the VSD, depending at the rate his heart grew. |
