In 1993, I entered Upper Serangoon Secondary School. It seemed to be strange because Mrs Ang was no longer around to help me to do well in my studies. Instead, I faced new resource teachers who would guide me around. I remember vivdly that I knew Mr Ong Poh Huat as he gave speech training in my primary school when I was in Primary 4. :)
Mdm Chua Siew Suan was my science resource teacher who I firstly met on the first day of school. She looked so young that I thought that she was just a relief teacher.....*laughing* She was very patient and kind but she often installed the sense of discipline in us to handle our studies and problems better. She was also there to provide us guidance and advice relating to our studies and life.
I also faced another strange thing.....there were new faces of 4 boys. I did not know them and even did not know which primary school they were from. I soon discovered that they were from Canssonian School for the Hearing Impaired (CSHI). Not all of them had friendly looks. *smile* So, it was not easy for me to get along with them at the beginning. I just wonder if I could stand their attitude. *smile* Only one boy, Alfred, was the most friendly guy. :) He had been my classmate for 4 years and even went to Ngee Ann Polytechnic with me and others. And, then we were in the same class for one year. You wonder if he looks handsome.....yeah, he is.....:) But I only treat him as my friend. *wrinks*
Mr Lim Chin Heng was my deaf Maths resource teacher who inspired me much about his abilities of becoming a teacher in spite of his hearing impairment. In 1995, I came to know one more resource teacher, Miss Rebecca Pakiam. I hardly describe her because she had a lot of positive things to guide me despite of her strictness. She taught me Literature, English and Geography from 1995 to 1996.
During my secondary life, I hardly mix with hearing students because I never communicate with them well. I only managed to say few words to them and sometimes taught them sign language to help them to break the barriers. Normal friends were really helpful and kind. I appreciate their help. If not for them, I would not make it to Ngee Ann Polytechnic. I had a good friend, Goma who helped a lot in interpreting the lessons. :) She has graduated from Singapore Polytechnic and is now married to her policeman husband. She now stays in Nepal. We have lost contact so I pray that Goma can contact me again.
I had a great surprise in 1995. I remember vivdly that my former primary school teacher, Mrs Ang, had came to my secondary school. I was overjoyed to see her in USSS. She told me that she was posted to USSS from Mountbatten Primary School. But I was not taught by her in the secondary school. I rather came to her for advice about my studies and personal problems. :)
In 1996, I sat for my 'O' level exams. I did not know whether I could make into Ngee Ann Polytechnic. But my teachers positively told me that I could do it. I just wondered and worked hard. In fact, I had six subjects to juggle. :) In my preliminary results, I passed all six subjects but the grades are average. So, I hoped I could do better than that.
Now, what happens to Miss Bheem? Well, she is now teaching in Boon Lay Secondary School. Mr Ong had retired in 1993 or 1994. Ms Pakiam had resigned from teaching and now runs business with her brother. Mr Lim and Mdm Chua are now teaching in Balestier Hill Secondary School. Mrs Ang finally retired from teaching in 2005.
What happens after that???? USSS is already closed down in 2004. Farewell to USSS!!! Let's find in next section - Ngee Ann Polytechnic
