A good haircut is a combination of these two things: proper shaping and proper tapering.

1. THE HAIR MUST BE SHAPED PROPERLY
From a back view, the hair should be lowest in the center back and slope up at the sides
From the study of the art we learn that curved lines are always more becoming that straight lines. WRONG RIGHT
From a side view, the outline of the hair should slant up toward the face.
WRONG RIGHT

In the "wrong" sketches on this page, it is quite obvious that the excessive weight and length of the hair around the face and behind the ears would cause the curls to drop down quickly after setting.

The "right" sketches illustrate the shape and length of a "Middy Haircut." A Middy Haircut is about three and one-half inches long on top and at the sides. The hair in the crown area is about six inches in length.

2. THE HAIR MUST BE TAPERED PROPERLYTo illustrate this point, we will part off the back from eartop as shown in this sketch.Because a perfect permanent wave is dependent upon a perfect haircut, it is safe to conclude that millions of permanent waves could be better if the hair were shaped and tapered properly

Here is an easy test to determine if your hair is properly cut:

Run your comb through your back hair and lift up. If your hair falls in a cascade of fluff, layer by layer, you have the right foundation for a good permanent wave and hairstyle. Many times a good shaping will make the hair appear longer than it was before the hair was cut.
