A good haircut is a combination of these two things: proper shaping and proper tapering.

In the "wrong" sketches on this page, it is quite obvious that the excessive weight and length of the hair around the face and behind the ears would cause the curls to drop down quickly after setting.
The "right" sketches illustrate the shape and length of a "Middy Haircut." A Middy Haircut is about three and one-half inches long on top and at the sides. The hair in the crown area is about six inches in length.
Here is an easy test to determine if your hair is properly cut:
Run your comb through your back hair and lift up. If your hair falls in a cascade of fluff, layer by layer, you have the right foundation for a good permanent wave and hairstyle. Many times a good shaping will make the hair appear longer than it was before the hair was cut.
