How to wear a t-shirt #16

How to wear a tshirt #16

Well, after 15 different projects with tshirts, you're bound to have scraps lying around - sleeves, pieces, threads and screenprint cutouts. I hope you've been saving them, because they will make a great quilt of any size. If you don't have that many scraps, start cutting your old, torn tshirts into 3-6 inch pieces.

Materials:
tshirt scraps
old tshirts
scissors
needle and thread or sewing machine
cotton stuffing
backing material (like a sheet)

1. Start by collecting all the pieces you have. Decide how big of a quilt you can make with them (or how big a quilt you're likely to actually make).
2. Cut a sheet or any cotton material to the size you'd like, either a rectangle or square.
3. Arrange the pieces on the backing, lining up edges. Trim where you need to so that edges don't stick out. Pieces should overlap 1/2 inch each.
4. Sew the pieces together, one by one. Try making two or more smaller squares or rectangles and sewing them together. You can also align a whole set of similar width pieces and sew them together at once. Don't worry about having different shapes and sizes - that's what makes it interesting!
5. Sew the backing to the patchwork, right sides together, on three sides and half of the fourth. Turn out.
6. Fill the quilt with cotton stuffing thinly, spreading it out with both hands.
7. Sew up the last part of the fourth side by hand.
8. To keep the stuffing from bunching up, sew straight stitches through all layers along the length and width of the quilt. You can do them in diagonals, crosshatch, or any pattern that covers the quilt evenly.
9. Enjoy your quilt on your bed this winter!

Variations: make quilts in different sizes or with points sticking out, for interest. Or arrange the scraps in a pattern (cut if you need to). If you just want a bedspread, you can forgo the stuffing and just put the backing on. You can also make small ones as placemats or even coasters.
