Watch those watches Last time I went home, I discovered a hidden treasure: a golden watch made of ovals that linked together. Each oval was intricate with designs, and the middle of each held a deep blue round crystal. The watch face was black, no numbers, with golden hands. I snatched up - easy to wear someplace nice with a new battery.
Watches can be the centerpieces of practicality, or like my blue crystal watch, pieces of jewelry by themselves. The famous Rolex is not complete without its gold and diamonds. The Cartier tank watch comes in daywear (leather strap and square face) or nightwear (metal all around). There are the ones that glow in the dark, or have a little light inside that you illuminate with a button. Some have multiple time zones, analog and digital displays, and dates and days of the week. Some are water resistant, or have their own calculators. There are even watches that play mp3s. You could also get a pocketwatch, a necklace watch, or a ringwatch!
So how do you choose? Find one that works for your daily routine. It should fit snugly, with no discomfort, not make noise when you're working with it, and not leave any marks on your wrist. It shouldn't be so unusual that you'll never find a replacement battery (if it needs one) but it should clearly say you. Look for things you need - if you can't stand faceless watches, make sure you get one with numbers or tick marks. If you are constantly checking the time in the dark, get a glowing one.
When you have your daily watch, find another one for your fabulous occasions. If you can wear your daily watch out, great. But your other watch SHOULD be frivolous - the jewel watch, the bangle watch, the one with the replaceable multicolor straps. Maybe you want one for nights at the opera. Get one that makes you feel special when you wear it.
Now get at most one more. Two watches are enough for anyone, unless you plan a watch collection. Take care of your watches, replace their batteries when they die and faces when they scratch. Wipe them gently with lens cloth. Keep them set correctly, and wear them often. They will keep you on time for years to come.
