Fashion Fixer: Spring Soirees

How to wear a t-shirt #17

Fashion Fixer: Spring Soirees It's time for that great time of year when backyards and patios are again open for parties. When get-togethers crop up after the cold winter, and people actually want to socialize outdoors. But given the potential rain, cool wind, the grass, the juicy hors d'ouvres, can you wear anything other than a slick raincoat and boots? Of course. Just bring an umbrella.

The situation: Outdoor barbecue An outdoor barbecue brings up images of steaks and ketchup and hotdogs that can stain your clothes. But tuck a napkin into your collar and you'll be safe. Wear a pair of jeans and a flirty top or button-down shirt, or a springy dress that you can wear with non-leather sandals. Avoid heels so they don't get stuck in the mud. Tie a hoodie around your waist or over your shoulders in case it rains or gets cool.

The situation: Spring wedding (or any fancy party) These are great opportunities to wear fun, dressy girly dresses. Guys must wear shirts and pants (if not tuxes), but women have the freedom of the dress. Find something in pastel. If it's not a wedding, white is great - but make sure it's not transparent when wet. Carry a parasol (good if it rains) and a shawl. Always always hold a napkin around your drink and under your mouth when you eat. Try to stay off wet grass, if you can. Otherwise, pick wedge heels.

The situation: Pool party A pool party is a great chance to show off a body you've been working on over winter. If you haven't though, it might be scary. If you intend to go into the pool, stick with a tank style suit with strategic holes or a low back to make it sexy. Bring a set of clothes for cover-up, like a long skirt you can just tie over, or a short dress or tunic top. Flip flops are perfect (or canvas shoes) and a towel will keep you warm.

The situation: Picnic It's easy to get bitten or worse at a picnic, so keep bug spray on hand. Stick to jeans, pants, full skirts, or shorts, to make sitting easier. A tank top will do on top, and bring a sweater for the cold. Use a tree for shade and to keep out drizzles. Wear flat sandals and spread your blanket on top of a plastic sheet.
