The Way You Walk When Steven Tyler sang "Walk This Way," he had a great walk to go with the lyrics. That strut, that style, is something that makes any of his outrageous outfits sexy. You don't need to sing or dress like him to use your walk. Just put a little oomph into it.
Your modeling lessons (see here) may have prepped you a little, but do you know how to walk? A model's walk is well-honed. Not only do they have to make walking on high heels look easy, they have to make sure not to trip, slip, and hold their heads high on a long stretch with people looking at them. These are people who could play basketball in six-inch heels.
Start by facing a long, full-length mirror. Place it somewhere with 10-12 feet of space in front of it (a dressing room is a good place). Now walk towards the mirror in shoes you might normally wear. How do you walk? What does your walk look like? What do you like or dislike about it?
Have someone take pictures of you walking - from different angles. You'll get a good sense of what your walking looks like. Then, try to alter it, changing one thing at a time. Here are a few things you can change:
1. Posture. Look forward, not down or up. Hold your head up, pull your neck back a little and keep it nice and long. Thrust your chest out slightly and your shoulders back. Allow a small curve to form in the small of your back. Tuck your pelvis so your bottom doesn't stick out in back, Squeeze your behind and suck in that gut!
2. Hips. Don't intentionally push your hips out to the side like a cabaret dancer. Instead, allow the shoes and the movement to move your hips up and down. Your foot placement will also help give you that non-bouncy hip swing.
3. Arms. Allow your arms to swing by your side. When your right foot goes forward, your left arm goes forward, and vice versa. Don't exaggerate the swing, but let it be natural. Sometimes you may wish to walk with a subtle swing, other times a larger one, but never so that your arms go higher than your waist.
4. Feet. Put one foot in front of the other. One key to a model-like walk is allowing your feet to fall on a straight line, not side by side the way most people do. Your feet should face forward when you walk and fall heel-to-toe. Don't bounce.
5. Attitude. The final thing that makes your walk perfect is your attitude in it. Models have walks for boredom, sexiness, edginess, anger. Inject your personality into your walk by walking how you need to feel - if you're in a bad mood, let your walk be cheerful, with your arms swinging, a big smile on your face, and a tiny bounce in your step. It will help cheer you up. For business meetings, walk briskly, no bounce, just straight forward, eyes ahead.
Once you've mastered these (ok, it's not easy!) you'll not only have a model's walk, but you'll command attention whenever you walk in our out of a room. Soon, everyone will be walking your way.
