Clean your closet (for real)

Fashion Fixer: Wardrobe Touchup

Three looks

Clean your closet (for real) When was the last time your closet was entirely empty? Maybe when you moved in. This is the time to really clean. You'll sweep out all the moths, the dust, all the things that slowly but surely destroy your clothes and shorten their lives. AND you can do it in an hour!

  • Start by emptying everything. Closets, racks, wardrobes, shelves, bins, boxes. Put all the clothes and accessories somewhere neatly in an order you'll remember, so you can put them back again. Get rid of all the stuff on the floors, toss anything you see that's trash or not needed anymore. Try to do it all in 15 minutes.

  • Now clean. This means getting out the dustpan and broom. Start at the top, getting cobwebs, dusting shelves and in-between. Sweep out the corners. Go back with a damp sponge or disinfectant wipes and wipe down everything (not the walls, the paint may come off). Scrub at spots. Do this for all the places you've emptied. Again, no more than 15 minutes max.

  • Take a look at what you've got. See any particular pile or group of things you never use (or didn't realize existed?). Is there a pile of borrowed clothes you promised to give back? Get rid of them somehow (put them by the front door to remember to take with you next time you go out). This is also a good time to toss out things you never wear, or things you've been holding onto for no good reason.

  • Think about how you want to restock. Before you actually put everything back, don't just dump it. Consider whether a different arrangement would be better for you. If you're a jeans-and-tshirt person, maybe you should keep all those in front. Or maybe you want to try to wear things you usually don't - bring those items up front and stash your overused clothes in the back. This is a good time to put away things you won't wear over the winter, or put precious clothes in moth-resistant boxes.

  • Put it all back. When you know how you want to rearrange your closet, put the stuff back. Start at the back and work your way to the front. Fold and hang everything neatly, and make piles you can see clearly.

Ah, your cleaning is done, and your closet looks better than ever. Now you can dress with ease.
