Go shopping in your own closet
I used to go shopping out of boredom, just looking for interesting things
I'd like to wear. Then I discovered a new amazing thing: I could shop in
my own closet. Now I could spend hours doing that.
Well, I do have a lot of clothes, but you don't need an insane number of
clothes (just more than you can count on your hands and feet) to do this.
You can start with a simple trick:
- pick 6 pieces you own (3 tops and 3 bottoms)
- try to see how many ways you can wear them. This is not just 9 ways (3
times 3), but many more, because you can layer, fold, roll, shift.
- Try these outfits on and remember (write down if you need to) the
combinations that look good.
Finding a good mix of clothing can be trial and error, but you can
maximize your chances of finding something that works AND of having fun
shopping in your own closet:
* Just browse, looking for things you'd like to buy if this were a store.
Try them on, see if you'd keep them and buy them again. These are the
pieces you love, so hang on to them!
* Try layering techniques. Staples like white shirts can be worn under
sweaters and cardigans, knit tops and vests and even t-shirts. Fold or
push up sleeves to create wrinkles and change length.
* Skirts can be worn in multiple ways. Wear them at the waist, or up
higher as either tube dresses or with a top like shorter skirts. You can
also layer skirts together!
* Pants can be rolled up or folded up. They can also be pushed up to
wrinkle. Secure with pins or ribbons or hem tape.
* Add accessories - scarves, brooches, ribbons, pins, belts with each top
or bottom to see how it looks.
Try your own variations. Don't forget outerwear, hats, and shoes. You'll
find a million new ways to wear the clothes you already own and have a lot
of fun just shopping at home!
