Create your signature
A signature is usually something you scrawl with a pen, but it has its place in fashion too. Ever notice how certain designers have their signature pattern or fabric? The Burberry plaid, the Vuitton print, even the Guess triangle. Designers
incorporate the same patterns into multiple items for a runway show and
use them over and over, in shoes, bags, clothes, and more. This is a designer's signature.
You can find your own signature by picking a pattern or fabric you like.
Fall is bringing in pinstripes, checks, paisley, flowers, and jacquard.
Buy a few classic items with that design and you can wear them with
everything. But before you begin, you need to make sure your signature
meets a few criteria:
1. Pick a neutral or non-color as at least one part of your pattern.
Black, white, camel, brown, gray work well and will go with many other colors.
You can mix these colors with other neutrals or a bright color, if
you're daring enough.
2. Pick something that is recognizable and nearly identical in every
piece. Try to keep things in a similar scale - if it's houndstooth, it can
be gray or yellow, but don't pick a tiny houndstooth in a bag and then a
really large one in pants. And avoid mixing entirely different
patterns, which will clash and blur your signature.
3. Wear only one patterned piece at a time. Imagine wearing a printed
Gucci bag with a plaid shirt and a polka dot shirt! Pairing with solids and very subtle prints of different styles works well.
4. Wear your one signature pattern often. The more you wear it, the more
it will be recognized. Soon, people will be saying, hey, that's YOUR
paisley!
5. Don't be afraid to change. If you find a pattern doesn't work for you,
be willing to transition to another, until you find one you can keep for
life!
