What is Reiki?
The word Reiki
(Ray-key) is a Japanese term meaning "life energy" and the practice
harnesses this life energy for healing, on multiple levels of the
body. Reiki affects the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual
aspects of the body, with the sole purpose of bringing healing,
balance, and connection to the body's systems. The effects include
stress and anxiety reduction, relaxation, and increased
self-awareness. It can also increase creativity, aid emotional
release, amplify energy, aid the reduction of "bad" habits, and lessen
mental clutter.
How does it work?
To an observer,
Reiki looks very similar to Touch Therapy or massage. The
practice of Reiki, however, does not require touch. The
practitioner--usually an extensively trained individual--passes their
hands over the participant from head to toe, usually taking about an
hour to do so. The Reiki energy passes through the practitioner and
into the body of the participant. Some people feel heat, vibration,
or nothing at all. Reiki energy never does harm, but the healing that occurs depends on the
individual's ability to accept the energy as well as their stage in
spiritual development. See the Spirituality page for more details about the body's natural energy
system.
