A Short History
A
gentleman named Dr. Mikao Usui discovered the practice in
Japan. Many
stories are told and unfortunately, it is difficult to tell how he
originally came about finding Reiki. Many believe that he
rediscovered a practice that had existed in the past or existed in
different forms at the time of his discovery. The traditional story
states that a student asked Sensei Usui to demonstrate healing arts of
Jesus or Buddha. Unable to respond, Sensei Usui decided to rediscover
the method to the healing art.
It is said
that he studied abroad for many years but met with failure. One day
he gave up and decided to journey to Mt. Karuma meditate,
saying that if he did not return in 21 days to come and look for his
body. On the 21st and last day of his meditation, he
received a vision in which he saw symbols and heard a voice that
taught him how to access the energy of Reiki. These symbols are still
taught today.
